The World Oceans day is on June 7. This year's theme is Catalyzing Action for our Ocean and Climate. Papua New Guinea is a global biodiversity hotspot. Containing approx. 7% of the world's biodiversity, it is one of 17 megadiverse countries as defined by the United Nations. Forests cover 60% of the country storing carbon, while its oceans lie in the heart of the Coral Triangle How we can contribute to conserving our marine resources. Individuals can contribute to ocean sustainability by supporting sustainable seafood choices, participating in local beach cleanups, reducing plastic use, and educating themselves and others about ocean conservation. Engaging with and supporting organizations focused on marine protection and sustainability is also crucial.

🛂 Nature knows no borders – or does it? The image below shows clearly defined borders across sand dunes due to differences in land usage either side. Nature does sometimes stop at lines drawn by humans – be it a local fence, or a transnational border – thus illustrating the importance of international and cross-border cooperation. 💻 The screenshot is from this Monday‘s online event hosted exclusively for members of the Institute for Global Negotiation. UArctic and the Arctic Circle welcome nominations for the 2024 Frederik Paulsen Arctic Academic Action Award until April 30, 2024. The Arctic Academic Action Award aims to further the development of new ideas that could contribute materially to preventing, mitigating, adapting, and reversing the effects of climate change in the Arctic. 100,000 Euro of unrestricted funds are provided to the awardee to help facilitate the development of ideas and increase impact through outreach, engagement and communication. Nominees should propose creative ideas that are action- and results-oriented and at an early stage of development. These ideas should nevertheless be grounded in academic research and scholarship, while also, where appropriate, giving due regard to the knowledge practices of Arctic residents, including Indigenous peoples. Nominations should describe an action that addresses the causes or impacts of climate change on the Arctic region. Ideas can be broad in scope, or geared toward local issues but could have results scalable to the entire Arctic region, and potentially beyond. We are looking for bright new ideas from people/groups with a demonstrable drive to see something achievable happen, and in the near future. Course description: The interaction between sub-Saharan Africa’s peoples and its natural resources has been central to its modern history. The continent’s abundance of flora, fauna, and mineral wealth fueled economic and cultural exchanges between African societies and the growth of powerful states. This wealth attracted external interests and drove Western colonization and exploitation of the continent, in which the mobilization of African labor, land, and minerals was central. Colonial systems demarcated the use of African environments for specific purposes—conservation, mining, and commercial agriculture, among others—and trapped African societies in a dependent relationship on the export of raw materials to the West. In the last sixty years, independent African nation-states have sought, but often struggled, to achieve meaningful sovereignty over their land and resources. Local African communities, today as in the past, have made meanings out of their relationship to their environment and tried to maintain that relationship in the face of attempted alienation and exploitation of its riches. While the study of modern African history has usually focused on political and social efforts to overcome external repression, develop the continent’s economy, and raise living standards, the central role of the continent’s ecological systems in all such efforts has not until now been the focus of historical study. We arrived in the House of Grímur in #Ísafjörður, where Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson, Iceland’s President 1996-2016, grew up. In 2008, I met him at a reception during a summer school on small states at University of Iceland (Háskóli Íslands). One of the strategies we discussed during the summer school was that #smallstates could expand their influence in #internationalpolitics by being “smart”. This means to find niches in which these countries could lead. Arctic Circle, a platform on #Arctic collaboration that is chaired by Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson and that supports our #Grimsson fellowship, is a good example for this. It gives #Iceland a leading role in the region and involves a diverse set of actors. In our fellowship, Elisa Debora Hofmann and I explore the role of one of these actors – science – in relation to environmental changes in the Arctic through arts and research.
