In construction, you use different materials with different qualities for different purposes. Right? For example, you don't insulate your house with steel, and you don't build your house out of insulation. It's important to tailor the qualities of the material to its intent. I’d like to introduce you to the idea of human engineering. This is what PXT brings to the table. It gives you the ability to engineer the environment, the people, and the roles together. If you don't understand a material’s properties, you might try to fit a square peg in a round hole. It's not that you can't do this if you don't have a personality assessment, but leaders should be looking for every way possible to understand the intrinsic properties and functions of the people that they work with in order to design the most sustainable and strong organizational architecture. There's nothing wrong with styrofoam or steel, but oftentimes, we're trying to build steel on top of styrofoam and wonder why it doesn't work. Construction needs to find ways to collaborate and create now, more than ever. My first-year studio completed a collaborative project of recreating Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh. It’s a great assignment allowing them to explore linework and see how different perspectives can come together to create a masterpiece. Every student contributed their best portion and even though their approach differed, the goal of completing the piece helped them to stay connected. Students aren’t typically excited about group projects, but this one perfectly represents architecture. Many disciplines come together with different expertise and approaches, and the common goal of completing a successful project reinforces collaboration and teamwork. Teamwork without collaboration can result in an incomplete project; Collaboration without teamwork can yield a complete project that lacks efficiency.
