It’s not acceptable to promise a client something that you cannot deliver. This can damage your relationship and jeopardize any potential future engagements. On the other hand, don’t lower the estimation of success with the intention of delivering greater than expected results - in other words - no sandbagging. The healthiest client relationships are built on openness, transparency, and trust. Trust and respect are powerful assets in any client interaction. Also, you never know when you might need to rely on mutual trust during challenging situations in a business engagement.

Be a sponge and don't forget to squish when necessary. Too often I see consultants falling into the same solution trap. They win a contract or get an internal consultation and within 5 minutes the consultant is talking nonstop about a perceived similar challenge or solution. This kind of consulting is harmful because it doesn't address the reality of the situation. It instead is informed by preconceived biases from past experiences of the consultant. The problem is rarely identified in the first couple minutes. If you can't understand why is it a problem, who does it affect, when and where it happens and how it impacts the larger picture, then it doesn't matter what your solution is. So be a sponge, ask why multiple times and who it is impacting, when and where it is happening and how it is impacting the big picture? Then respond.

Building trust is essential in consulting. This is definitely one of the hardest things to do because it can take forever to build and crumble in seconds. Clients want to work with someone they believe in. 👉 Build credibility by showcasing client success stories, testimonials, or case studies. Be transparent and real. No need to fill it all with cliches and what you think they want to hear. Say what you need to, no fluff. A small example of how you’ve helped in the past can go a long way in earning trust.

Have you ever wondered how to tell if a consultant is truly reliable? Pay attention to how they handle client requests. Sometimes, the most valuable thing they do is push back and say 'NO.' A consultant who says 'YES' to everything might seem accommodating, but it's the experienced ones who carefully assess what works and what doesn’t. They understand that saying 'NO' when necessary helps avoid costly mistakes eventually. So, are you seasoned enough to say 'NO' when it matters? #ConsultingTips #BeConfident #AvoidMistakes
