The economic benefits of hosting the Olympics are substantial and long-lasting. According to a study by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the total economic impact of the  London Olympics was £9.9 billion (approximately $13.2 billion USD). This figure includes direct spending by visitors, as well as indirect benefits such as increased tourism and infrastructure development. The 2016 Rio Olympics, for instance, generated over $2.5 billion in international tourism revenue, with visitors from over 200 countries. The Games can have a significant impact on the local economy, creating jobs, stimulating business growth, and increasing tax revenues. The  Vancouver Olympics generated over $1.3 billion in economic benefits for the local community, with over 10,000 jobs created during the Games. Hosting the Olympics often leads to significant investments in infrastructure development, which can have a lasting impact on the local economy. The 2014 Sochi Olympics, for instance, saw the construction of over 100 new buildings and the renovation of over 200 existing ones, with a total investment of over $50 billion. The Olympics also leave behind a legacy of iconic venues and infrastructure that can be used for years to come. The 2012 London Olympics, for example, left behind a number of legacy venues, including the Olympic Stadium, which has been converted into a football stadium and hosts various events throughout the year. Thus, the IOC is looking for a permanent city/home for the games. Here's why: - "White Elephants": Post-games, many facilities turn into expensive ghost towns. Take Rio 2016— 12/27 venues built just for the Olympics are now largely abandoned, with maintenance costs draining the city’s resources. (In Bejing, the main stadium costs $10M/yr to maintain and is rarely used)🏗️👻 - The Economic Myth: Despite promises of economic boosts, the reality is often different. London 2012 cost over $18 billion, but the expected long-term financial benefits didn’t fully materialize. In Mexico City, this financial burden was put on taxpayers in particular students who protested the games (turning into violent tragedies that have led to the city backing out of hosting any future games) - Environmental Impact: Building massive, temporary infrastructure has huge environmental costs. Welcoming the World back to Utah! The International Olympic Committee just named Salt Lake City, Utah as the preferred host for the 2034 Olympic Games. The anticipated economic growth, global exposure, infrastructure and city funding will level up Utah once again. In 2002 the Olympic Winter Games drove more than $5 billion in economic impact. The worldwide exposure the Olympic Games brought, combined with upgrades in tourism, leisure and sport infrastructure led to the steady economic growth and popularity Utah sees now. Tourism, meanwhile, was boosted, with Utah witnessing an overall 72% increase in skier/snowboarder visits between 2002 and 2019, and a 42% increase from 2020. Source: Olympics.com

It's an exciting week for those of us working around events with #Paris2024 set to kick off this Friday, the announcement that #Birmingham will host the Invictus Games in 2027 and 10 years today since the opening ceremony of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. At Spirit of 2012 we are always trying to get under the skin of how events leave a long term legacy in a place, and explore with partners from across sport, arts and culture and communities, how this impact could be maximized. 10 years on from the spectacular opening of the Glasgow 2014 Games we with our partners CCSE UWS, undertook some polling across Scotland to ask about the impact, the results are in - https://lnkd.in/evWJc_Zr We were delighted that the impact is still being felt now by people in Glasgow and across Scotland. At a glance the polling told us that the Games : Increased civic (71%) and national pride (75%). Improved Scotland’s international reputation (75%). Enhanced access to sporting facilities and activities (69%) Increased emphasis on public health and physical activity (76%) Strong support (73%) that the Games enabled Glasgow to host other major sporting events. Generated a lasting impact for the host city (69%) This broadly mirrors polling we undertook 10 years on from #London2012. It shows the power not just of the physical and economic legacy, but the magic and memory, the way events make people feel and connect to their place. It shows that in hosting major sporting events it's not just the sport that's important but the cultural and volunteering elements are critical in delivering that long term legacy.

The Olympic and Paralympic Games are one of the biggest cultural events in a nation’s history. Now is the time for Australia to harness the opportunity of Brisbane 2032 and secure our place as a global cultural powerhouse. As outlined in the latest analysis from A New Approach (ANA), there are clear steps we can take to achieve this. Our nation needs a long-term national cultural plan to inform collaboration between government, industry, business and philanthropy, which could be modelled on the successive National Sports Plans and Strategies. The creation of a formalised Ministerial Council as part of National Cabinet would help facilitate the development this plan, along with a national partnership agreement for the Games’ four-year cultural program, to ensure it leaves a legacy of cultural, social and economic benefits for all Australians. To secure global impact, we should also pursue the creation of a dedicated cultural relations institute. Australia is one of only two nations in the largest 15 economies in the world to not already have an institute of this type. The article is interesting because it highlights that the changes that the Paris City Council wants to promote are on the right track (according to our current paradigm) and that the Olympics have given it the excuse to promote them politically. But it precisely fails to answer the question it asks, because it focuses on the City Hall of Paris under whose jurisdiction only the center of the metropolis is... They do not talk about the large facilities on the periphery (stade de France, Olympic village, suburban Grand Paris Express...). These must be addressed from the regional scale (Ile de France region). My opinion is that it is being done well because it reuses a lot that already exists and the objective is to reinforce policies that were already planned (transport, regional integration, inequality in banlieus, etc.) compared to the classic logic of the Olympic Games of creating external facilities. process.
