Mess around and find out! Today I got a call from another broker asking for advice about placing a policy. Turns out I already quoted it for another agent (yes, this is a small world). I've been working the account for over a month and the insured changed his revenue projections several times (from over $10mm down to $250k!). Now he shopped with another agent and told them he'll do $200k. How's that going to work out? The other broker is declining the account. I called my underwriter and gave him the story. Likely my quote will be pulled (thank goodness!). Insured will be looking for another agent, though with a greatly reduced set of options. All his games are going to result in much higher costs or failure to secure coverage (meaning loss of a major contract). Insurance isn't cheap, but it's still cheaper to be honest!

This is a great lesson for brokers and insureds. Honesty and transparency are the best policies for procuring insurance; trying to "game" the system never works out for anyone involved. This goes double when you're working with a closely knit vertical like marine or aviation.
