Still ridiculous, but not shocking. Given geo-political un-certainties, look for a lot of nation-states to start mixing Industry with National Security…this is something that pre-COVID US Adminstration did well, and was/is continued under the current adminstration. We’ve started the immediate and obvious needs, like chip foundries….but we need to start planning for 15-20 years, given demographics set to play out globally over the next 50 years, we need our leaders to start looking for the NOT obvious industries that have to be bolstered….like steel foundries, aluminum smelting, a new source of pig iron, etc. Given projected labor shortages, at roughly 400,000 currently, we’re expected to peak in 15 years at just under 1 million…we need swift call to action, with incentives, for private industry heavy manufacturing to re-shore to North America, ideally to the USA given our energy inputs…but it all requires action, not only from our local and National political leaders, but our AEC leaders and advocates. This is from a $1B commercial real estate project I managed in the Boston area, showcasing underground utilities at one intersection. 🚧 Most lines lack depth information or are inaccurately depicted. 🤓 Ever wonder what happens when engineers face uncertainties? 🤔 They often note: "WE CANNOT ASSUME RESPONSIBILITY FOR DAMAGES INCURRED AS A RESULT OF UTILITIES THAT ARE OMITTED OR INACCURATELY SHOWN ON SAID RECORD PLAN, SINCE SUB-SURFACE UTILITIES CANNOT BE VISIBLY VERIFIED." 📝 This disclaimer, which was printed on this drawing, essentially acknowledged the inaccuracies without offering a reliable resolution. It begs the question: How can professional engineers confidently stamp plans they know to be flawed?
