I love the original Land Rover UK Defender and I'm an obsessive Manchester United fan. Since INEOS started developing the Grenadier and started looking into investing in the club (thanks Jim Ratcliffe FIChemE!), I've been paying more attention to the INEOS brand. INEOS interests me because their consumer facing moves mean they're a brand for whom brandING just got much more important - they're even into fashion now with Belstaff! So, I tried to work out what their brand positioning and/or consumer value proposition is. And it was HARD. There's nothing approaching a positioning statement on their website - the homepage describes WHAT they are, not WHY I should care. On the About page we get "We make change happen"... not very tangible! The Vision & Values bit offers... "INEOS is a customer-focused company. Its business mission is to be the supplier of choice to its customers." Zzzzzzzzzz. I did find some nice stuff that could be great ingredients for a compelling consumer proposition: - The Culture bit of the site says, "Sports and fitness are integral to the INEOS culture, as are grit, rigour, humility and a real team ethos." Lovely stuff. - The page about INEOS on Wikipedia explains that "'Ineo' is Latin for a new beginning, 'Eos' is the Greek goddess of dawn, and 'neos' is Greek for something new and innovative." Useful! - Top execs talk about the fact they're privately owned and have an independent spirit. Nice. And then there's soundbites you get from the likes of Sir Dave Brailsford around "Marginal gains" and this notion of various aspects of their business all being about "performance"... not a new idea for businesses that are into sport, but it offers an interesting territory to explore. Then I saw a tagline on a hand soap refill; INEOS Hygienics - Science + Performance ...at first glance it just seems to, literally, just list the 2 main things the INEOS brand does; chemicals and sport. They use it in soap/sanitiser context but I can see how it's relevant to making cars and (just about!) jackets too. It could be the start of something. For instance even just switching the "+" for an "=" would crank things up a few notches. Science = performance. Linked, not listed. Much more interesting. We do science so well we outperform the rest. We science the best chemicals, we science the best 4x4 vehicles and we science the shit out of sport in sailing, cycling and football. I reckon the idea behind this, if not "Science = Performance", could be MASSIVE. Because no global brand owns "science". Yet LOADS compete over "innovation" and "technology" and "engineering" and "design". Science is all those and more. In fact it is fundamental to all 3 of them. Science is awesome. It explains. It solves problems. It is humble and always trying to better itself. It's a brilliant thing for a brand to want to be. Anyway I'll let you know if I get a call from Sir Jim....
