It's astonishing to me the number of times in my life I've heard someone say "yeah, I'm not even going to try to say that" when presented with a unique name. Individuals should not feel compelled to change their names, whether they're nicknames or otherwise, solely for the convenience of others. We can do better. Never underestimate the importance of “work friends.” More than 25 years later, I cherish my lifelong friendships with these power women I met in the hallowed halls of Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP as a summer associate. We have supported one another through weddings, children, divorce, the loss of parents and every other up and down life brings. I can’t imagine my life without them. May everyone be so fortunate to find such incredible “work friends” and the workplace that brings them together.
