Recent government-to-government agreements between tribes and states, such as the partnership between the state of California and the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians for mutual aid through fire and rescue, demonstrate how governments can work together for public benefit. These collaborations showcase the importance of fostering positive relationships between tribal and non-tribal governments to address common challenges and improve public safety, well-being, and the quality of life for everyone. https://lnkd.in/gqmpyEsQ

What’s the solution? I know there are no easy answers but what steps can we take? I hear Jim Mullins comments about local EM not always knowing how to access federal resources. I hear the finger pointing to the feds saying you don’t pay attention to us at the local level. If both are true… where is the middle? Is it the state resources? Is it better training of local EM’s of the resources? Or maybe easier access to the resources? Is it a stronger mutual aid system? Is it a different approach to community preparedness… going from a “culture of preparedness” to a “culture of responsibility”? What are your thoughts? Hard questions for all of us.
After every catastrophe presidents tell us that the local government owns the job and that the White House (i.e., FEMA) is leaning forward to support them with anything they might need The reality is that, beyond the big cities like New York, Los Angeles and Houston, few local governments can come close to doing what is needed Believe me when I tell you that your emergency manager understands this better than anyone And because they know that they don’t have the bandwidth they need, the prospect of a catastrophe is daunting Most keep this to themselves and labor in obscurity, dreading the day when the black swan will come https://lnkd.in/gbfKTGRu

The Gulf of Mexico just had it's first named storm of the season, and it's barely hurricane season. One of the many things I love about what we do at the Gulf of Mexico Alliance is act as a connector, not just for traditional environmental issues like water quality or marine debris. We look at how people are connected and impacted by Gulf issues, and we connect them with the right resources. Proud of what we do. Are you prepared for storm season? https://lnkd.in/ej_59B7Z
What we do: Improve resilience in coastal communities 😁 We know when communities prepare for short and long-term hazard risks, they are better able to recover from disasters. Which is why we recently supported a workshop for community members in Port Sulphur, Louisiana, connecting them with preparedness agencies and resources. Our project partners Institute for Diversity and Inclusion in Emergency Management hosted the meeting. Participants included Ironton Reconstruction and Development, Second Harvest, Plaquemines Parish Government staff, Louisiana Department of Insurance, the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Preparedness, and FEMA. This project is funded by Gulf Star partner Freeport-McMoRan. . . . #GoodfortheGulf #GulfofMexico #stormprep #coastalresilience https://lnkd.in/eu_5EmS3
