This challenge contributes to 25-50% of all missed appointments across health systems. At the 17th Health Disparities Conference at Xavier University of Louisiana, Audrey Shawley, MD, and Isabel Anderson unveiled their study titled “Impact of Free Rideshare on No-show Rates and Healthcare Utilization in High Medical and Social Needs Patients.” Their research at the MedVantage Clinic within Ochsner Health investigates how free rideshare services can mitigate transportation issues as a social determinant of health. Dr. Shawley, who is preparing for a residency in internal medicine, and Isabel Anderson, a third-year medical student, explore effective strategies to improve healthcare access. Early findings highlighted the vital role of communicating the availability of paid rides and the importance of attending appointments, supported by phone reminders.
