This graph will not shock construction professionals. The blue bars show the total construction turnover, and the red line represent the percentage share of engineering work. Australia's infrastructure-centric construction has grown significantly while the remaining non-engineering work has stagnated. This can be fairly interpreted that housing has been deprioritised. Major Developments in Florida's Construction Sector Florida’s construction industry is experiencing significant growth and investment. Over the past year, the state added 37,100 construction jobs, reflecting a 5.9% increase, ranking it second nationally for numerical job gains. This growth coincides with the state’s ambitious Moving Florida Forward Initiative, a $4 billion investment aimed at accelerating critical infrastructure projects to address congestion, improve safety, and enhance economic growth. Key upcoming projects include: Interstate 75 Improvements: Expansion and redesign of the I-75 interchange at Pine Ridge Road, with construction beginning in early 2025. State Road 29 Enhancements: New alignments and widening projects to improve traffic flow around Immokalee, scheduled to start in 2027. Capacity Upgrades: Adding lanes on an 18-mile stretch of I-75 between Golden Gate Parkway and Corkscrew Road. While these projects highlight Florida’s commitment to infrastructure, the industry faces a shortage of skilled labor. Industry leaders are advocating for increased federal support for workforce training programs, including the re-authorization of the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act and the Carl D. Perkins Act. Florida’s construction sector is at a pivotal moment, with substantial opportunities ahead for industry professionals and communities across the state.

The construction industry is expected to see continued growth in construction spending in the second half of 2024, with significant investments in infrastructure projects. The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act are set to inject billions into the construction sector, creating opportunities for contractors who focus on upgrading transportation networks, water and energy systems, and public buildings. Maintaining financial flexibility in order to take advantage of opportunities will be critical to your company’s success. However, challenges such as fluctuating material costs and labor shortages persist. To thrive in this landscape, contractors must embrace technological advancements, implement sustainable construction practices, and invest in workforce development initiatives. In light of the current economic uncertainties, contractors must prioritize robust financial planning and effective risk management in the latter half of 2024. Developing comprehensive project budgets and securing favorable financing terms will be pivotal in successfully navigating market fluctuations. When considering the acquisition of new equipment for upcoming projects, businesses must explore alternative financing options such as leasing. Opting for short-term equipment leasing conserves capital and offers the benefit of 100 percent financing with no down payment required. The key to achieving success rests in adapting and proactively managing risks. Those who remain informed of data and trends will establish a solid foundation for sustainable growth. As we move into the second half of 2024, the construction industry faces a dynamic economic landscape filled with both challenges and opportunities. From fluctuating material costs and labor shortages to evolving regulatory requirements and technological advancements, construction contractors must stay vigilant and adaptable to thrive in the coming months. Collaborative Construction: How Contractors, Engineering Teams Together Drive Project Success Some commercial real estate developers work primarily with architects and engineers to establish a project’s scope and expected cost, leaving the selection of a general contractor or project manager until they are nearly ready to break ground. And by following this traditional approach, they may be leaving money on the table. A better practice is to engage contractors during project planning, industry experts advise. That’s because experienced contractors can provide practical insight into pricing and availability of materials and labor, informing critical planning decisions. Those same builders can be a sounding board for site civil engineers mapping out site preparation, utility installation, access and sequencing for the various tradespeople working on a project. “Involving a general contractor early is particularly beneficial for large-scale or phased construction projects,” says Daniel R. Hines, a principal in Bohler’s Charlotte office. “It enables us to approach the design more strategically, reduce costs and deliver more accurate timelines.” “The overall goal of getting a general contractor and an engineer working together is to maintain your schedule and your budget,” agrees Jeff Mitchell, director in the Charlotte, North Carolina office of Duffey Southeast Construction, Inc. Construction Inc. “Engineers are the experts at designing projects, but ultimately it is the contractor or subcontractor that puts them together,” he says. “Getting subcontractor input on how structures go together can keep the price where it needs to be. “When a site civil brings Duffey Southeast into a project, the firm works with them to look for ‘constructability’ issues such as long lead times to acquire materials,” Mitchell says. “If there are tons of rocks on a site, or if we are tying into manholes that are very deep, we look for solutions to those challenges,” he says. “We help developers chart out the resources and time needed to complete various tasks and phases in a project, and our field experience can help resolve issues.” Plus, Dolph Hargis, project manager at Duffey Southeast, discusses a three-building project that is part of North Chase at The Park, McDonald Development Company state-of-the-art industrial campus in Huntersville, North Carolina. https://lnkd.in/dG_y7Au9 Sponsored by Bohler #industrialCRE #CRE #development

Scope of work in building and construction projects The scope of work of a building and construction project is comprehensive and multi-faceted, as it includes many interconnected phases and activities. The work begins with project analysis and planning, where the requirements, objectives and specifications required for the project are studied. This is followed by the design stage, where the building or structure to be constructed is drawn and planned, including dimensions and engineering details. https://lnkd.in/dWp9SWxJ https://lnkd.in/dAxrAE4D https://lnkd.in/dyd6xrNb
