Perseverance is the key to success.
“I applied for 82 roles for training contracts and/or paralegal roles. One solicitor gave me a chance.” Rebecca Wood, now a partner at Woollcombe Yonge Solicitors LLP, was one of thousands who applied for a trainee scheme with the CPS in 2006/7. Unable to secure an interview, Rebecca didn’t let that stop her. Read more on her journey into criminal defence law below ⬇️ “I persevered and applied for admin roles at the CPS, so that I could at least be learning the trade and gaining some skills. “I then started working as a paralegal role within a law firm in their crown court department for 18 months, which I absolutely loved. I observed the advocacy from counsel in the higher courts, learnt how to case manage and also qualified as a police station representative. “I then went straight into a training contract at the same firm and qualified as a solicitor in February 2011.” So what is Rebecca’s advice for those currently facing their own setbacks? 💭 “Perseverance is key. I made all of those applications and it just took one person to take me on. Keep going! “Experience is important, go and sit in court if you're interested in that area of law. Send letters to the court to sit in with the judge. Do some voluntary work in the area you’re interested in. “It may be that you decide it is not for you and that’s an important lesson too. “There is more to law than city firms, think outside of the box and do not put yourself in one. “Please find your own path.” 🌟 Thank you Rebecca for sharing your story! 👏

More tips for trainees, especially if you’re starting your third seat or settling on an area of law for your career. Really break down the doors and be clear on what you’re aiming for so your firm can help you achieve it.
Top tips for trainee solicitors 1) Please say what areas of law you like or think you might like to do during your training contract in terms of seats. It is okay to say. 2) It is your training contract and communicating clearly to your trainee supervisor and firm is key. You cannot be all things to all people. People who genuinely care about your development will not be offended by what area of law you would like to qualify into (even if it is not what they do). 3) 6 month seats go quickly and in reality you need to apply for qualification jobs probably half way through your 3rd seat. That means seats 1 and 2 are important to explore what you do and do not like. 4) The key is to find an area of law that you enjoy and can see yourself doing. It is also important to ensure that where you qualify that you have a team member who will help, supervise and support you as a newly qualified solicitor. Top tips for paralegals 1) Explore NQ plus options with your law firm to get to qualified positions. 2) Some of the best solicitors I know started their career in paralegal roles. The experience and the confidence it can provide is invaluable. 3) Experience can be used as time to count on the NQ plus route. Ask your firm to sponsor you on this route to qualification. Shoosmiths has really good options and support systems to achieve qualification and beyond.

Graduated from the LPC and feeling the pressure to secure a training contract immediately? 𝐓𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐚 𝐛𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐡, 𝐢𝐭’𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐚 𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐞. I’ve seen it time and time again...candidates convinced they’re falling behind, desperate to secure a TC as soon as possible. But those who take a year or two as a paralegal first? More often than not, they’re the ones who go on to thrive. They start their training contracts already knowing how law firms operate, how to manage client expectations, how to handle real cases. The transition is smoother, the confidence is higher. Those who rush in straight from the LPC often spend the first six months just trying to find their footing. In truth several Clients when looking for a candidate 0-4 PQE will tell me "if the candidate has done a couple of years in support roles", those are going to be the candidates with actual depth of knowledge and understanding that outweighs the face value weighting of their PQE expertise. The Law Gazette, Financial Times and Totally Legal have all published studies in recent years detailing the benefits of this pathway. TL has it at 44% of TC's are undertaken by those with Paralegal experience, which when you add into the mix the growing validity of alternative pathways, tells you there's certainly more than one way to achieve that dream! Firms value experience. A training contract will come, and when it does, you’ll be ready to hit the ground running. Taking the time to build solid foundations isn’t falling behind, it’s setting yourself up to succeed. #LPC #TrainingContract #LegalJobs #LegalCareers #Oxfordshire #Berkshire #Hampshire #Wiltshire

Securing a training contract with no prior legal experience…🤷🏻♀️ I’ve gained quite a few new followers recently, mainly from my posts about becoming a trainee solicitor! I know how overwhelming it can be to secure a training contract, and how worrying it feels to think that your non-legal work experience will not be enough to obtain one. Prior to working in a law firm and securing my training contract, I worked in a range of different roles, from waitressing to retail. Although these were not the jobs I saw myself in long term and not directly relevant to law, I know now how useful they were for my own development and the transferable skills they have given me now I am a trainee solicitor. So, for everyone working towards securing a training contract, remember this: every role you’ve ever had builds skills that are invaluable in the legal profession. During my journey to becoming a trainee solicitor, I learned that no experience is ever wasted. Whether you’ve worked in retail, hospitality, customer service, or any other role, you’ve already been developing skills that will set you apart in your legal career. Here’s why: ✨Client Interaction: Serving customers in retail or hospitality is the perfect training ground for developing client-facing skills. Active listening, patience, and professionalism under pressure are qualities every solicitor needs. ✨Problem-Solving: When you’ve had to resolve complaints or troubleshoot on the spot, you’re practicing the kind of lateral thinking required to advise clients and tackle complex legal issues. ✨Time Management: Balancing shifts, deadlines, or high-demand environments mirrors the prioritisation and organisation needed in a busy law firm. ✨Teamwork: In every job, collaboration is key - just like it is during your training contract when working on cases or transactions with colleagues across different departments. The legal profession is about understanding people, solving problems, and managing challenges effectively - all of which you’re already doing in your current or previous roles. So, if you’re working in a job that feels worlds away from law right now, know this: you’re building the foundation for your future success. When the time comes, draw on those experiences in interviews, applications, and, ultimately, your training contract! What’s one skill from your current or past roles that you’ve found invaluable on your legal journey? Let’s share and inspire others! #traineesolicitor #legalcareer #transferableskills #trainingcontract #aspiringsolicitor
