Wind energy’s contribution to mitigating greenhouse gas emissions cannot be overstated. Many variables need to be addressed when designing wind turbines. The persistent challenge of noise and noise regulations can be a limiting factor that constrains turbine operation, diminishes power output and increases production costs. We are very glad to share our recent article regarding probabilistic frequency stability analysis considering wind power integration, published in IEEE Transactions on Power Systems. Existing probabilistic frequency stability studies rarely consider the internal dynamics of wind power generation with different control strategies, which can cause the inaccurate results especially when we equip wind power generation with fast frequency response to support system frequency. This paper proposes a multi-element low-rank approximation (MELRA) uncertainty propagation analysis method to tackle this problem with good accuracy and efficiency. 📰 Aero-Servo-Elastic Simulation of the International Energy Agency’s 15MW Reference Wind Turbine for Direct-Drive Generator Integrity Modelling ✍ Magnus Bichan, Pablo Jaen-Sola, نزمي السلامي sellami Nazmi and Firdaus Muhammad Sukki This paper presents the development of a full turbine model and subsequent aero-servo-elastic simulation of the IEA 15MW Reference Wind Turbine, such that aerodynamic loads can be obtained and then applied to a simplified drivetrain in Finite-Element Analysis. This approach facilitates the quantification, through a computationally efficient method, of airgap deflections within the direct-drive generator caused by the shaft eccentricity that arises from aerodynamic loads. 🌊 IEA 22MW Monopile RWT Model Released for QBlade 🌊 The 22 MW reference wind turbine features blades nearly 140 meters in length and is the first model to utilize the new 6x6 FPM Timoshenko beam feature of the recent QBlade 𝟮.𝟬.𝟳 release. This model is a direct translation from the windIO yaml definition of the 22 MW offshore reference wind turbine developed within IEA Wind TCP Task 55 REFWIND. A code-to-code comparison of this new 22 MW turbine design, focusing on the aeroelastic modeling of ultra-large rotor blades, will be presented by William Collier at the Torque 2024 conference this week, during poster session 1B.
