I did a thing today. An impactful thing. I served as a volunteer table host at a community listening event. There was no agenda other than simply listening. Anyone could come and join a topic table and speak to their lived experience. In a safe space. Created with intention. It’s hard to listen without agenda. It’s an intentional act. It was humbling. And amazing. About 20 tables talked about everything from homelessness to philanthropy to mental health to diversity. But here’s what struck me: If we could engage the entire community in conversation and ask them to define our values as a community….we would find that we all share the same values. We all want good schools, opportunity, safe communities, housing, healthcare, excellent public services. Once you know this…that we ALL want the same things…how do you ignore inequality…homelessness…food deserts…joblessness…poor educational options? You can’t. Because we ALL want the same things. We want to thrive and grow in our communities. We want to be heard. We want to matter. Find a way to help your community be better, do better. Don’t stand idly by and say gosh, what a shame. Be the change. Work for the greater good. Help the rising tide raise all boats. As it should.

You want your appeal letter to get to folks before Thanksgiving. That means you need to get your mailing to the post office the day after Election Day. Time is of the essence! If you are doing your appeal yourself, keep in mind the story formula: The Community has a Problem, Your Organization has a Solution, but Donor Dollars are needed to Implement. Follow this pattern for a successful appeal message. Make sure you have the logistics figured out: How are you going to get the appeal printed, stuffed, and to the post office. Maybe you are thinking... there has to be a better way- If that is the case for you, head over to www.amponow.com and create your appeal through the website. It will take less than 30 minutes and you will be able to check year end appeal off your things to do list. Give it a try. Amy #AMPO
