Is the #circulareconomy the "innovation opportunity of a generation", as Sebastian Munden of WRAP said? - Can old mattresses lead to new business ventures? - Can discarded wool be utilised for the construction industry? - What challenges do business owners face when thinking about #sustainability? We heard these and many other stories last October at the #CircularEconomyHotspotCymru, an event we attended to improve our understanding of circularity, #systemsthinking, and the challenges and opportunities this space can provide. This article summarises some of the stories we heard at the conference, and brings additional context to some of the claims made one the spot. If it makes you think of something, or if any claims within need further discussion, drop us a comment.

Did you know up to 80% of a product's environmental impact is determined at the design stage? For reasons such as this, one feature of a circular economy is product design. Products are conceived with the intention of extending their lifespan, facilitating repairs and enabling easy disassembly for recycling and repurposing. We've adopted this approach and an overall circular economy model in our business – you can learn what else this involves and the various benefits it creates here: https://ow.ly/GV5q50RmXGf

At DA, we firmly believe in creating products that withstand the test of time and foster emotional attachment. Our designs are meant to be cherished and passed down through generations. By prioritising durability and repairability during the product development phase, we not only minimise waste but also contribute to the conservation of valuable resources. Embracing the circular economy is not only an ethical imperative but also an opportunity for innovation. By rethinking traditional linear models, we can unlock the full potential of a circular economy and create a future where waste becomes a thing of the past. Ready to embrace the circular economy in your next product venture? We would love to hear from you. https://lnkd.in/gc-BVp6r #circulareconomy #innovation #Remanufacturing #SustainableLegacy

At Planet Alba 🌍 we're diving into another topic that is long overdue for discussion: the circular economy. Is this a versatile concept that can truly be implemented across all industries? Circular economic models aren't just modern trends; they have roots stretching back decades, promoting sustainability by encouraging reuse, repair, recycling, and remanufacturing. Beyond just benefiting the bottom line, adopting circular practices can lead to innovation, waste reduction, and a stronger connection with consumers who value environmental stewardship. For example, in the construction industry, using recycled materials can significantly reduce the environmental impact. In tech, refurbishing electronics extends product lifecycles and reduces e-waste. Studies often highlight these benefits, but the real stories come from professionals grappling with these practices in varied sectors. So, let's stir up some peer-driven insights: Can the principles of the circular economy be realistically applied in your industry? What benefits have you observed or hope to see that go beyond mere financial gains? We are eager to hear your thoughts and experiences on whether the circular economy is as universally applicable and beneficial as touted. #CircularEconomy #SustainableBusiness #IndustryInnovation

10/12 A post a day until the launch of our 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲: How do we build products nature would love? Over twenty years ago, William McDonough & Michael Braungart published their book about Cradle to Cradle. The concept includes three key ideas: ➿ Everything is a resource for something else ☀ Use clean and renewable energy 🌈 Celebrate diversity 🥇 Cradle to Cradle is not just a methodology of product design and management; it is also a product standard overseen by the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute. ☘ In the end, it comes down to designing products the way nature does. 🎓 Want to learn more about sustainable products? CIRCULAR ECONOMY MODELS Circular industrial models have three main drivers, namely scarcity of resources, lack of landfill space and the desire for sustainability. Linear models result in leakage of material, mostly via landfilling processes or inaccessibility of the material and hence this model relies heavily on virgin materials as inputs into production. Circular models, on the other hand, aim to close these material loops, hence the term circularity. However, closing the loop is only one of the strategies employed in mature circular economies and therefore, circularity is often discussed in conjunction with other environmentally sustainable practices, rather than in isolation. This depiction forms part of an extensive and interesting module where the several enabling strategies or tactics that support the circular economy are explained. The module also includes guidance which can be applied to business successfully. Link to modules page: https://lnkd.in/epbaXpAC and click on Module 1 – Strategies and Enablers.
