Join us in September for our Strength in Numbers: Fall Preventions Program. This is a free educational series we offer to adults 65 and older. Unintentional falls threaten the independence and health of adults 65 and older. Every 18 seconds, an older adult is treated in the emergency department for a fall. During this series, VNA physical and occupational therapists will determine the risks of falling, do strengthening exercises, balance activities, manage medications and visual concerns, and offer home safety recommendations. Practical items such as strengthening devices, medication organizers, and visual aids will be distributed to series participants. These sessions will be Mondays, 1 - 2 pm, beginning September 9 through to October 21 (skipping October 14) To learn more or to register, please get in touch with the Easthampton Council on Aging & Enrichment Center at 413-527-6151 Thanks to grants from Eversource Energy Foundation and the Roy Foundation, this educational series is free to participants.

After the stress of nursing school was making her food struggles worse and worse, Kate took the courageous first step of speaking up to seek support. This beautiful animated story takes us through her journey of finding Equip, and in the process, finding the life-changing care she needed. Kate was diagnosed with ARFID (avoidant-restrictive food intake disorder), which is characterized by having a disinterest in eating certain foods or enough foods but not necessarily because of one’s body image. Instead people with ARFID often struggle with: 👅 Sensory sensitivities 💭 Fears around food & eating 🥱 Lack of interest in food 🚫 A small list of acceptable foods ARFID is a different type of eating disorder, which is why specialized treatment is so important. As Kate reflects, having a care team dedicated to treating her specific condition made all the difference. Now, Kate has the tools she needs to carry out her own life-saving work as a nurse. Heads Up: Protecting Kids from Traumatic Brain Injuries🧠 Did you know head injuries are a leading cause of serious problems in children and teens? Here's what parents need to know: 🤕Not all bumps are concussions: Just because your child seems okay doesn't mean they're in the clear. Be aware of different head injury types (mild, moderate, severe). 🤕Age matters: Kids under 4 and teens (15-19) are more at risk. Toddlers are learning to move, and teens might take more risks. 🤕Watch for hidden signs: Headaches, dizziness, and mood changes can all be TBI symptoms, especially in younger kids who might not be able to tell you exactly how they feel. 🤕Don't ignore a bump: Even a seemingly minor head injury needs a doctor's evaluation. Tests can reveal hidden damage. 🤕Treatment is available: From rest to surgery, there are options to help kids recover from TBIs. Recovery can take time and involve therapy for things like speech and coordination. Being informed about traumatic brain injuries empowers parents to prioritize their child’s safety. An area of impact which can be overlooked.
Our focus on ARFID during Eating Disorders Awareness Week continues... Today, we'd like to highlight some reasonable adjustments for children with ARFID in school. All pupils should be helped to fulfil their potential. Reasonable adjustments can help level the playing field by minimising the disadvantages that pupils with disabilities might face compared with their peers. Are you struggling with ARFID? We're here to help. https://lnkd.in/e5QHtTs8 🦉

Children born with a cleft lip or palate often face one or more of these health problems: feeding/eating/swallowing disorders, failure to thrive, delayed or disordered speech and language, breathing and hearing difficulties, chronic ear infections and dental problems. Cleft treatment and intervention should be started as early as possible, with a proper surgical treatment plan and wraparound care into adulthood; a child should be able to restore normal function and live a happy, healthy and fulfilling life.
