📈 Non-equity partnership at US elites has seen a sharp increase in 2023. Some fun stats from law firms : ✅ Milbank saw more than 50% growth in its non-equity tier. ✅ Gibson Dunn & Crutcher’s non-equity tier increased by 44%. ✅ Fried Frank's non-equity tier increased by 44%. ✅ Willkie Farr grew its non-equity tier by 29%. ✅ Vinson & Elkins increased is non-equity tier by 25%. ✅ Paul Hastings increased is non-equity tier by 14%. ❓Why is this happening❓ A couple of reasons: 💰Let's start with the obvious one, non-equity partnership increases profits for equity partners. Non-equity partners charge their time at the same/similar rates to equity partners, but recieve a reduced payout. As such, it is a smart business move from the equity partners of law firms. 💼 Additionally, non-equity partnership takes away some of the uncertainty with being on the mysterious 'partner track.' Non-equity partnership provides a testing ground for associates coming up through the ranks, to determine whether they are productive enough to become an equity partner. The Partner badge gives non-share partners more credibility with clients, and helps them build out their book of business.
