In anticipation of COP29 Azerbaijan, the COP29 Presidency and the International Energy Agency (IEA) are organizing a series of High-Level Energy Transition Dialogues on 15th May at IEA Headquarters in Paris. Co-chaired by H.E. Mukhtar Babayev and Dr. Fatih Birol, these dialogues, in collaboration with United Nations Climate Change, aim to garner global consensus on ambitious, just, and equitable energy transition pathways aligned with the 1.5°C target. Central to the discussions is the mobilization of clean energy investments, especially in developing economies. Specific topics include implementing energy outcomes from COP28 UAE, aligning energy ambitions with national contributions, and identifying key factors to accelerate clean energy transitions globally. Ahead of the #COP29 conference in #Azerbaijan, here are the latest news updates and planning steps for the #UnitedNations climate conference... 1. Azerbaijan will upgrade its national emissions-cutting target ahead of the COP29 conference, Reuters said. 2. head of the conference, the biggest fights involve how to allocate trillions of dollars from developed nations to emerging markets — and how China fits into the equation, Bloomberg reported. Indeed, countries cannot agree on the size of a global funding bill to help the developing world fight climate change - let alone how to split the bill, Reuters added. 3. Azerbaijan and the #UAE unveiled plans for three large-scale solar and wind projects in Azerbaijan, totaling 1 GW capacity, during a ceremony held at the Baku Energy Forum, Euronews reported. 4. Azerbaijan is hoping to raise the share of renewables across its energy sector to almost a third with over $2 billion in green investments, Reuters said. 5. Azerbaijan is working on a proposal to place a levy on oil, gas and coal production in order to fund climate action in developing countries, Bloomberg reported. Reflecting on Energy, Peace and Conflict Today COP29 Azerbaijan is focusing on Energy / Peace, Relief and Recovery theme. Energy is the largest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions and is a top priority for global climate action. Building on the outcomes of the first Global Stocktake and moving towards implementation, COP29 Azerbaijan will provide a space for stakeholders to gather and make collective progress. Beyond this, in many areas there are continuing conflicts related to the quest for energy sources (starting from households to states from use of natural resources like water, fuel wood to water for production through hydropower dams). In the meantime, the world is not on track to achieve #SDG7, with 675 million people still living in the dark and lacking access to reliable power sources (4 in 5 are in Sub-Saharan Africa). This has been worsened by climate change impacts resulting in increased vulnerability for many people. This justifies the call for a global action to scale up #adaptation. This is the core of the negotiations on the #NCQG and the Global Goal on Adaptation COP29 Azerbaijan. More so is the urgency for climate finance (including fulfilment of earlier commitments) that is adequate, new, additional, public, non-debt creating and unconditional to address the lack of access to #cleanenergy. My view is that small cumulative investments (household efficient cookstoves, solar energy systems, biogas etc.) for millions without #cleanenergy can make a better world to live in. COP29 starts next week in Azerbaijan. It is rightfully positioned as a financial COP and is the opportunity to make significant progress on paying for this transition. At the same time, it must build on the outcomes from last year’s Global Stocktake, and further steps on emissions cuts and energy transition urgently. The president of Azerbaijan has called fossil fuels a “gift from god” rather than providing proposals on how to transition away from them. Thankfully, several more progressive governments have been stepping up instead – openly or behind the scenes – to advance proposals and ideas to implement the transition to renewable energy. 🔍 What are Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs)?  These voluntary national targets are countries' commitments to cut emissions in line with the Paris Agreement. But current NDCs are on track to overshoot 2°C warming by 2050. At #COP29, there’s a critical need for enhanced ambition in NDCs. ETC’s paper highlights that technological advancements and reduced costs of clean energy technologies like solar and wind, mean countries can now set more ambitious targets without impeding economic growth. #NDCs are not just pledges – they can help unlock private investment if they are clear, actionable, and linked to strong policies. #CleanTransition #INDIA #BRICS #JustTransition So it's exactly how I wrote (predicted) some days ago in another comment..... It's not #EnergyTransition which is driving #Geopolitics but is rather the other way round. No chance to succeed if you can't manage a proper and suitable solution for the most energy-hungry (and developing) economies and countries... And second point: you need a tradeable energy economy, and (till now) #energymolecules has been by far the preferred mean of energy dispatching / long distance trading. This will not end. The good news (if any) is that #India will pursue an expansion of #Renewables (possibly helped by foreign money), but I guess they will keep their core energy model around #coal (which is by far not a very good news), and use additional renewable power to cover the (marginal but significant) expansion of the economy / industry / final / private energy demand. At this point (of convolution) of the #COP stories we should wonder if also our "save the world alone" #energytransition model in Europe makes sense as it was conceived back in Mr. Timmermans' age (Timmermans: disappeared meanwhile.....).
