An interesting session by Professor Alberto T. Estévez on artificial intelligence deep learning models for 2D and 3D model generation in generative design and fabrication. 2D and 3D diffusion models, convolution neural networks, recurrent neural networks, and transformers were discussed with some of their most available open-access software and AI models. such as Luma AI text to 3D object generation, Deforum Stable Diffusion V0.7 for sequential 2D data generation for 2D image and animation generation, and AI Text to Video model Sora AI. Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) have gained noticeable recognition in AI for their novel ways of generating and improving data, and their critical role in creating photorealistic images, altering image styles, and producing realistic human faces, among others. Introduced by Ian Goodfellow and team in 2014, GANs rely on two interactive neural systems – a generator that creates data and a discriminator that differentiates between original and generated data. Despite large neural networks, like LLMs, demonstrating remarkable abilities, training them require excessive GPU memory. We propose Flora, a sub-linear memory optimizer with momentum and adaptive learning rates which dramatically reduces the GPU memory compared to Adam, while achieving comparable or slightly better results for pre-training. Compared to GaLore and LoRA, it is more memory efficient and yields better model quality in pre-training and fine-tuning. 👋 Check out our ICML-2024 work on memory-efficient full-parameter training. Flora is a drop-in replacement for Adam that is sub-linear in memory. With two lines of code change, one can practically pre-train multi-billion parameter LLMs (and other models) on consumer-grade GPUs. Flora also uses less memory and GaLore and LoRA while achieving better results. Pytorch and Jax code available (see blog post linked below).

The Lex column in yesterday's Financial Times had a piece about AI start-ups, mentioning Graphcore and their development of Intelligence Processing Units (IPUs). IPUs have a "sweet spot" for Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) - let's hope they can break into the AI chip market.
