📣 The Working Group on Monitoring Methodologies (#WGMM) has delivered its 2024 report to the European Commission on monitoring the use of CO2 neutral fuels (#CNFs) in road transport. 🤝 This group, of which Eurogas is a participant, is the result of collaboration and innovation between over 50 experts from the whole automotive and fuel value chain, including trade associations, research bodies and, significantly, also OEMs. This wide collaboration ensures that the report accurately reflects the needs of the industry in balancing decarbonisation and competitiveness, and represents a milestone in advancing sustainable transport solutions across Europe. 🔦 Some key highlights from the report: 🔸 Importantly, the report proposes a comprehensive definition of CNFs, covering renewable fuels like #biofuels and #eFuels that meet sustainability criteria under the Renewable Energy Directive. This ensures alignment with EU climate neutrality goals. 🔹 11 technological options to #monitor the use of CNFs were assessed, including solutions such as digital tracking systems, mechanical adaptation of tank fillers, and combined mass balancing with a digital handshake. These options provide robust and verifiable methods for #tracking CNFs through the entire fuel supply chain, also considering the user point of view. 🔸 CNFs are highlighted as a key complement to electrification, offering an additional pathway to decarbonise #roadtransport and accelerate the phase-out of fossil fuels. The recommendations focus on realistic, scalable solutions that integrate seamlessly with existing infrastructure. The energy intensive industries play a pivotal role in the #energytransition, but they are facing a number of sector-specific challenges in their quest for sustainable solutions to decarbonize their operations: especially industries requiring high-temperature heating processes are still heavily reliant on fossil fuels. Achieving a #deepdecarbonization for these sectors will likely require a combination of technologies, and although energy intensive businesses are increasing their investments for energy efficiency, key players are not overly confident about reaching their decarbonization targets, as DNV’s recently published report “Transforming Through Uncertainty” revealed. On the other hand,  a shift towards #greenhydrogen, #ammonia, and #CCS signals a strategic pivot towards sustainable practices, with over half of the energy intensive businesses planning to invest in these alternative fuels, while a similar number expect a fast scaling up of CCS in the next five years. How will this funding reshape Europe's sustainable fuel industry? Elyse Energy, a French leader in sustainable fuels, has secured €120 million ($126.3 million) in funding from a consortium of prominent investors, including Hy24, PGGM, Bpifrance, and Mirova. This investment underscores the accelerating push toward decarbonizing the aviation and maritime sectors. The funding will advance Elyse Energy’s groundbreaking projects, including the E-CHO initiative located in the Lacq industrial hub in France. With a planned capacity to produce 82,000 tons of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), 200,000 tons of e-methanol for maritime and industrial use, and 28,000 tons of naphtha, E-CHO aims to transform the landscape of European e-fuel production. Pierre-Etienne Franc, co-founder and CEO of Hy24, emphasized the significance of this investment: “We must stay the course on French and European ambitions to decarbonize the maritime and aviation sectors … projects like Elyse Energy's contribute to energy sovereignty.” Elyse Energy’s president and co-founder, Pascal Penicaud, called this milestone a pivotal moment: “This fundraising marks a significant milestone for Elyse Energy and the European e-fuels industry. It reflects growing demand for sustainable molecules and fuels from clients in aviation, maritime, and industrial sectors.” In addition to E-CHO, Elyse Energy is advancing other major projects like eM-Rhône and eM-Numancia, further solidifying its role as a pioneer in low-carbon fuel solutions. Agile, partnership-driven business models will be needed to drive decarbonization, sharing risk and cost across the energy value chain while ensuring end users benefit from lower carbon solutions at competitive costs. Infrastructure and Scaling Issues: Renewables require infrastructure in terms of efficient storage and transport; hydrogen and CCS have to be scaled up based on long-term commitments with subsidies and well-aligned regulatory frameworks. Policy and Market Alignment: The continuous dialogue with policymakers would help develop policies and minimize the cost impact on end consumers, building public confidence in such technologies as carbon capture storage and hydrogen for a low-carbon, globally competitive market.
