August 1 in Student Affairs: A Time for Reflection and Renewal As summer draws to a close and we prepare for the new academic year, keep the following in mind: 1. It’s perfectly okay if you didn’t complete every project you set out to tackle this summer. 2. It’s perfectly okay if you feel behind in your preparations. 3. It’s perfectly okay if you feel as if you need a bit more time to get ready before students return. Extend yourself some grace. The attitude and energy we bring to our work with students will far outweigh the summer projects left unfinished. This summer has been challenging for many of us, with the complexities of FAFSA, enrollment numbers, maintenance upgrades, and more. If no one else has told you yet, you’ve done a great job this summer. #August1 #StudentAffairs #HigherEducation #Leadership #Students

An important conversation about equity in college admissions. This highlights how privilege continues to shape opportunities, but also reminds us that success isn’t guaranteed by where you go—it’s about what you bring to the table. How can we ensure that every student has a fair chance to showcase their true potential? #BRiDDGtheGap #BRiDDG #EducationalEquity #CollegeAdmissions #FutureOfEducation
I'm sure many of you have seen this article from New York Magazine. It highlights a stark reality in college admissions: an entire industry of educational consultants is helping affluent families gain an edge in the process. From crafting the perfect application to building tailored extracurricular portfolios, these services promise to unlock doors to elite institutions—for a hefty price (+$120k!). But here’s the truth: access to these resources is far from equal, and the advantages they offer often come down to privilege, not merit. This creates a system where wealth, rather than potential, becomes the deciding factor in opportunities. And here’s another truth: getting into a prestigious college is no guarantee of success in college—or in life. A perfect application doesn’t always translate to academic, emotional, or professional readiness. Success comes from resilience, curiosity, and a willingness to grow—qualities that aren’t determined by consultants or crafted narratives. So how do we level the playing field? How do we create systems where students from all backgrounds can showcase their unique journeys and strengths without relying on expensive gatekeepers? This is the conversation we need to have about equity in education. #BRiDDGtheGap #BRiDDG #EquityInEducation #EdTech BRiDDG https://lnkd.in/gQhPwYub

It has been an intense couple of weeks doing the final marking in time for the Exam Board next week. As a lecturer it's a bittersweet time because it's always a joy to read students' essays and see their passion for their subjects come to life as I read through but... Even though the lectures are over and assignments are handed in, many students aren’t off partying and celebrating as some might assume they are. I’ve seen firsthand the immense pressure they face after submitting assignments… 👉The stress of finding a job 👉The stress of knowing what's next 👉The concerns over their grades 👉And the comparisons that start with other people in their class, beginning new opportunities, or on different journeys or timelines. Even if they don’t compare, there’s still pressure. It's an exhausting time as the gap between May and September is a time where work is still ongoing for both lecturers and students. If you’re an employer starting your recruitment for graduates, be there for them as much as possible, support them, mentor them and in general be kind. 1) I'm alive - hi! 2) Just doing some reviews for UniTasterDays and spotted another great video from a university: https://lnkd.in/exqubQmg 3) I wonder when employers will start making videos like this (promotional I guess?) to showcase their apprenticeship programmes? I think they're needed. Ok back on my LinkedIn hiatus. #apprenticeships #apprenticeshiprecruitment #earlycareers

For the 7th year, the Graduate School in Partnership with the Office of Research awarded Graduate Summer Awards to support students' scholarships. Today we introduce Aíne Norris. Advisor: Dr. Marc Ouellette Q: What do you like to do in your spare time? A: When I’m not at my desk you can usually find me walking around Richmond, VA (my home) and browsing the shelves of bookstores and oddity shops. I’m also learning to play the theremin. Q: What are the most significant challenges that you face in your graduate journey? A: My graduate journey has been immensely rewarding, even at its challenging moments. My most significant challenge is not having enough hours in the day. Q: What advice would you give to aspiring graduate students? A: Jump in. Don’t wait. Chase your big ideas and put in the time to learn, grow, and test limits. The results and knowledge are infinitely worth your effort.
