Before going into every interaction, every team meeting and every networking event, we should embrace these words. 🪷
Not because the person who said them was an exceptional human being.
But because they simply ring true.
You are making an impact everywhere you go.
A personal story that illustrates this:
Many years ago, I was a nursing student doing my clinical rotations.
We were assigned a handful of patients and our preceptors expected us to be fairly autonomous in our dealings. They “watched” us work, but only intervened when necessary.
One of my patients was an elderly woman with a host of various issues. Her family was visiting her on that particular day. She was stable and doing well - until she wasn’t. Suddenly, she exhibited the signs of starting to have heart-attack. I immediately sprang into action with the nursing interventions that I knew in that particular situation. The symptoms subsided and by the time the doctor made it to the bedside she was fine.
I followed my training with the goal of giving the best possible care to that woman. I treated her like I would want a loved one who was in the hospital to be treated.
Days later, my father, a local attorney, received a call from a prominent district judge. The judge asked my dad if he had a daughter named Shawna. He described a few days before that his “mother” was in the hospital and that she had a nurse who he was convinced saved her life with her actions. He noticed the nurse’s name tag and deduced that I must be a relation.
We impact others in ways we never dream possible.
Be a shining light in someone’s life.
