Just because you can afford to hire someone full-time doesn't mean you should. Knowing how to leverage 1099 talent is a superpower. Benefits of 1099 talent for employers: - don't require lengthy interviews (get right into it) - don't require equipment (no overhead) - don't require benefits (cheaper to employ) - don't get PTO (pure pay for work) - can be let go without severance (easy to part ways) - don't get stock (no dilution) Benefits of 1099 engagement for talent: - not stuck with one employer (portfolio approach) - no set hours (flexibility) - can stop/pause anytime (freedom) - clear expectations (always feel useful) - more balanced power dynamic (a client is not your boss) - mutually beneficial (it's inherently win/win) There will always be a need for full-time talent, but I'm starting to think every full-time role should start as a contractor role and only become a full-time one if there's some specific reason why contractors won't get the job done.
