There are many myths surrounding the field of social work. Too many social workers internalize the misconceptions and undervalue their impact. They believe everyone in the field can do what they can do. That is false, false, FALSE! Whether you have: an expertise in working with a specific population, extensive knowledge in a certain treatment modality, a knack for advocacy, or an aptitude for community organizing Your gifts and talents are important, needed, and VALUABLE. “Don’t underestimate your value and purpose. Social work is not just a profession; it's a calling. It's about seeing the potential in every person, understanding their unique challenges, and working alongside them to create solutions. While the road can be challenging, the rewards are immeasurable when we witness the positive impact we help create. I am proud to be part of this profession, contributing to the well-being and dignity of individuals and families. Social workers are often the unsung heroes, working tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure that everyone has access to the resources, opportunities, and support they deserve. Q&A with Amanda Somdal LCSW, LICSW-S What do you enjoy most about the field of Social Work? The social work field and I were made for each other. I love how diverse and versatile the field of social work can be. I get to work with people on all levels within socioeconomic status, ethnic groups, professions, communities, businesses, and services. You can find a social worker anywhere – we are there, and even if we aren’t labeled “social worker,” we are doing social work. Social Work values state that we are to share resources and information, connect people with people, and support people and their decisions and choices. We are to speak up for those who struggle and can’t. Amazingly, there are so many ways to exemplify social work values. We can work on the same micro, mezzo, and macro issues with different approaches. I have a colleague who instead writes letters to our legislation; another colleague prefers to host community meetings, and another prefers to provide counseling to those impacted. These three people are working in different ways towards the same goal. That’s social work for me. #gallaudetmsw
