This is a fully integrated geothermal power and lithium extraction project, that has potential investment of around $28 billion and job opportunities for up to 7,940 employees, according to the press release. Congratulations to all on the Controlled Thermal Resources Holdings, Inc. team! What is most exciting to me about this project is the multi-energy production. Here, we have two energy projects, both likely capable of independent, profitable production, but choosing to combine for compounding positive impact. This is what we need to see as we pursue deep decarbonization - combining resources that produce a win-win, forward looking business. That, and long term commitment. Right now, 10 years is common for geothermal developments. "Sage Geosystems Inc. (Sage), a geothermal baseload and energy storage company, announced the location of its 'first-of-its-kind' project, which would be the first geothermal project in Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) territory. "Sage has entered into a land use agreement with San Miguel Electric Cooperative, Inc. (SMECI) for the 3 MW Geopressured Geothermal System (GGS) energy storage facility. The 3 MW EarthStore system will be in Christine, Texas near the SMECI lignite coal power plant. Sage will operate as a merchant, buying and selling electricity to the ERCOT grid. (. . .) "Sage will be applying for two drilling permits in Texas. The first permit is in Atascosa County for the EarthStore facility in Christine and the second permit is in Starr County, adjacent to the company’s existing test well." A novel pumped hydro gravity storage system will be installed at what was once Italy’s largest coal mine, with the renewable energy it stores aimed at helping transform the area into a technology hub as it shifts away from the fossil fuel industry. Energy Vault and coal mining company Carbosulcis, owned by the Sardinia regional government, have unveiled plans for the 20MW gravity-based system to be deployed in the 500-metre-deep mine shaft. Celebrating Another Breakthrough in Domestic Lithium Production At 227 feet below sea level, California’s Salton Sea rests at one of the lowest points in the United States. Beneath the surrounding desert, however, is a natural resource that could lift our clean energy economy to unprecedented heights. DOE’s Jeff Marootian joins the groundbreaking ceremony for CTR’s “Hell’s Kitchen” development by the Salton Sea. Last week, developer Controlled Thermal Resources (CTR)—a recipient of multiple rounds of federal funding and technical support through the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Technology Commercialization Fund—broke ground on the region’s newest geothermal power plant. The facility will not only generate electricity from geothermal energy, which has immense untapped potential in its own right, but also serve a vital, dual purpose: extracting lithium from a hot, saline fluid called “brine,” which flows among rocks deep in the subsurface According to estimates, the Salton Sea region harbors almost 3,000 megawatts of geothermal energy potential. The landscape around the Salton Sea, which is exceptionally well-suited to both geothermal power generation and lithium extraction, is already dotted with 11 geothermal power plants. CTR’s new facility will be the first development in the region that can perform both functions, presenting the country’s first opportunity to pair clean, renewable electricity with a domestic source of lithium. Last November, DOE announced the results of the study, which confirmed the region has immense potential as a domestic source of this critical resource. The study found that the Salton Sea region could produce more than 3,400 kilotons of lithium—more than enough to support a complete, nationwide transition to electric vehicles. A robust domestic supply of lithium will not only protect American businesses and consumers from supply chain disruptions, but also reinforce the independence of America’s new, clean energy economy. Pilbara, Australia, needs transmission network investment to unlock A$100 billion opportunity. Australian think tank Climate Energy Finance (CEF) has signaled that the mineral-rich region of Pilbara, Western Australia, needs rapid investment in its transmission network to ensure renewable energy, such as solar, can help drive decarbonisation. Indeed, the Superpowering-up: Accelerating the electrification & decarbonisation of the Pilbara report signals that just 2% of the region’s electricity needs are currently being met by renewable energy, with fragmented corporate energy production and grid transmission structures undermining progress. In this regard, solar PV could prosper in the region, and various projects have already been explored in Pilbara. For instance, mining giant Rio Tinto recently announced its intention to develop an 80MW solar PV plant to supply green power to its iron ore operations. Alongside this, Australia’s Fortescue said last month that its 100MW North Star Junction solar farm was partially operational, whilst it also plans to develop a 3.3GW renewable energy hub to help power its mining operations in Western Australia. The CEF claims that, when implemented properly, a common-user infrastructure could be the most effective way to support the Pilbara’s future economic growth in a net zero global economy.
