SCA Claim Services is a nationwide catastrophic claim appraisal and adjusting services provider through our expansive Catastrophe Division. But we are also rooted in California and have been for 45 years and counting. That makes us a local resource for insurance carriers and their policyholders who have sustained damage to their homes, businesses, or other structures, as well as autos, specialty vehicles, and equipment. SO WHATS THAT SUPPOSED TO MEAN? Part 2 {The following is the continuation of a series of quick definitions that pertain to wildland, commercial & residential fires. These are written for the Western States audiences but can be applied anywhere.} DEFENSIBLE SPACE You have most likely crossed paths with the words Defensible Space many times before. Perhaps at your local fire department’s booth at a Home Show? Maybe is showed up as a memo inside the envelope of you homeowners insurance bill? And, undoubtedly you have watched a new program that focused on a large, dangerous wildfire where it was mentioned. Per NFPA 1140, Chapter 3, 3.3.22, Defensible Space is defined as, “An area where the selection, location, grouping, and maintenance of combustible materials and vegetation are conducted in such a manner that the opportunity to ignite a structure or its attachments is minimized.” There are many documents out there that do a great job identifying the materials and vegetation as well as make recommendations on how to improve your fire vulnerability. I feel that some critical building materials need to be added into these guides as well as some wording seems out of date, the documentation is not the problem. WE ARE THE PROBLEM. These documents are usually bright and have eye-catching scenes of wildfire or emergency response displayed on the cover and throughout. That certainly grabs our attention, and we like to read these guides, but once the final page has been turned, it becomes out of sight – out of mind. We ALL need to start by finding ONE thing we can do...and DO IT...and TELL SOMEONE ABOUT IT! You need help on the second one? Give me a buzz! A pile of Defensible Space flyers tossed in the trash or buried on the coffee table cannot fight a wildland fire. Need motivation? This 13-year-old video from the US Forest Service is one of the most understandable & relatable videos on Defensible Space I have ever come across. There have been many new technologies and materials that have entered the conversation since 2011, however the basic observations and attainable recommendations discussed within remain the same today. Imagine your home as one of the three they explore, which one has the most similarities? It comes in at just under 30 minutes, you can squeeze it in between Royal Match and scrolling IG. Take a peek here -> https://lnkd.in/gju2CfAK If you do not have Defensible Space information in arms reach, your friends at any of these organizations can help!
