Showcasing Innovation for Safer Roads and Events Last Thursday, we had the pleasure of hosting one-on-one innovation presentations at our Nuneaton Depot. This exciting event brought together key stakeholders from the region’s largest infrastructure projects, their supply chains, and police forces across the Midlands to explore ground-breaking safety technologies. A special thank you to HRS for partnering with us to demonstrate cutting-edge solutions like proximity alarms, geofencing, and CCTV systems. These technologies play a critical role in enhancing safety at highway and utility maintenance sites, as well as at events, by: ✅ Alerting workers during incursions so they can move to safety swiftly ✅ Capturing evidence to support authorities in prosecuting offenders While responding to risks is crucial, prevention remains Core Highways’ top priority. That’s why we were thrilled to showcase our innovative BAAVA barrier to attendees, including Midlands police forces. The BAAVA barrier offers an unparalleled level of protection by physically closing roads at maintenance sites and events. With its ability to stop a van travelling at 30mph within just 5 metres, it’s the shortest stopping distance in its class. Compact and perfect for urban environments, this solution can: 🔹 Reduce reliance on HGV blocking vehicles at events 🔹 Cut costs, staffing levels, and asset usage 🔹 Lower the carbon footprint for major events The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with attendees excited about how the BAAVA barrier can transform safety and efficiency across their projects. Thank you to everyone who joined us—we’re looking forward to advancing these solutions together and making a real difference in safety on the ground. #Innovation #RoadSafety #Sustainability #CoreHighways #Collaboration #StrongerTogether

🌟 Excited and #ManMetProud to repost this fascinating article by colleague Prof. David Bamford and Marcus Mayers on the evolution of railway signalling! 🚂 From police officers with painted truncheons in 1830 to today's digital systems, they've traced how railway safety has evolved over two centuries. Did you know the term "Police Station" originated from railway safety shelters? 💡 What's particularly interesting is their analysis of current challenges in implementing affordable digital signalling systems. The article balances historical context with modern operational challenges and future opportunities. 🎯 Key takeaway: The potential for cost-effective signalling solutions could save billions in transport budgets, but there is a need to overcome the innovation barriers in this safety-critical sector. Must-read for anyone interested in #RailwayInnovation #OperationsManagement #DigitalTransformation #Transportation Congratulations on another insightful piece, David! 👏 Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/gy87H6R9
Our latest insight article traces the evolution of railway signalling from early police-controlled systems to modern digital technologies. 👍🏼Marcus Mayers Mayers and Prof David Bamford highlight the challenges of implementing affordable, reliable digital systems and emphasizes the need for innovation to enhance capacity, safety, and efficiency in rail operations. "The potential prize for low-cost signalling solutions and streamlined approval processes is huge; saving billions of pounds from over stretched national and regional transport budgets. How do we make this happen?" Read our latest insight article here https://bit.ly/4faQfJP

This year marks the 20th anniversary of OTSI’s investigations into bus, ferry, and rail incidents in NSW. Our investigations have uncovered valuable insights and lessons that remain relevant today. We share safety lessons with stakeholders to improve safety and enhance public confidence. Today, we reflect on an investigation which occurred in 2007, highlighting several serious bus-related incidents that occurred within just over a week. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐝 From June 19 to 27, 2007, two pedestrians and a cyclist died, and another person was seriously hurt, all in bus-related incidents. • June 19: A pedestrian was hit in the 'Buses Only' lane after leaving a car and crossing three lanes on the M2 Hills Motorway, West Pennant Hills. • June 19: Another pedestrian was struck while crossing Clarence Street near Druitt Street in the Sydney CBD. • June 20: A cyclist lost control and fell under a bus in Rutherford. • June 27: A pedestrian was hit while crossing Druitt Street near Kent Street in the Sydney CBD. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐎𝐓𝐒𝐈 𝐟𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝 It is significant that in each instance the bus drivers were not at fault and the actions of the pedestrians, and the cyclist increased the risk of impact with a bus. During this time, most Sydney buses had internal CCTV with rear-facing cameras. These cameras were not helpful in front-accident investigations. Buses outside major cities had no CCTVs installed. 𝐒𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐭𝐲 𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐬 Our investigation report recommended equipping all large buses in NSW with both forward and rear-facing digital CCTV. These cameras enhance safety for drivers and passengers and help understand the circumstances of incidents. This recommendation led to the installation of forward and rear facing CCTV equipment by the private operators involved in the incident. The Ministry of Transport included this requirement in the specifications for buses operating under Metropolitan and Outer Metropolitan bus contracts. For more information, download the report - https://lnkd.in/gMujf7D7 CCTV footage is a key resource in our investigations today and has provided helpful insight in many of our bus investigations including the recently released Green Valley Bus Fire report - https://lnkd.in/gvMztvWX and the Campsie Bus Collision report - https://lnkd.in/gpRid6_P #OTSI20Years #SafetyReflections #FromOTSIArchives #PublicTransportSafety #BusSafety

𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘆 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝟯 𝗘𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗼𝗮𝗱 𝗦𝗶𝗴𝗻𝘀! On the road, it's crucial to recognize and follow these three types of signs to ensure safety: 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗦𝗶𝗴𝗻𝘀: These signs tell you what you must do, like stopping at red lights or staying within speed limits. 𝗖𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗦𝗶𝗴𝗻𝘀: These signs warn you of potential dangers ahead, such as sharp curves, pedestrian crossings, or sudden changes in the road surface. 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗦𝗶𝗴𝗻𝘀: These provide important information, such as directions to nearby fuel stations, rest stops, or other services. Every morning at 5:30am, I walk my dog along a dark, cold stretch of road. With my head torch on and the road quiet, you'd think it would be peaceful - except for one thing. Every single car passes by speeding well over the 30-40 mph limit. Few slow down at the right points. It’s a stark reminder of how critical proper signage and traffic management are to keep people safe. This first-hand experience highlights the importance of using technology, like LED signage, to ensure road safety. At TWM Traffic Control Systems, we’re committed to making roads safer for everyone, especially in these overlooked areas where risks are higher. Have you experienced similar issues? How do you think we can tackle them together?
