"Why Railroads Are Still Important Today" is the title a program that I have been presenting to retirement communities and libraries in Lancaster County. As long time interpreter/volunteer at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, I have been happy to share my interest and background about railroads. In an era of planes and automobiles, perhaps we take railroads for granted. Railroads have long played a significant role in the history of our country. For the past 194 years, growth of our nation can be attributed, in large part, to the hundreds of railroads that crisscross the United States. Railroads provided economic opportunities, opened the West, developed towns and communities and were the primary mover of goods and passengers across the country until the era of the interstate highway system and jet transportation. Following the decline of railroads in the 1950s through the 1970s, railroads have since experienced a resurgence in their importance for both passenger and commercial (freight) service. This resurgence continues today. In this presentation we will explore the history and future of railroads and their importance in 21st Century America.

So GTHA transit operator Metrolinx is getting a new interim CEO soon. Michael Lindsay's top priority is apparently getting the oft-delayed Eglinton Crosstown LRT 🚈 up-and-running, which makes sense. But those of us who use the GO Transit network likely have some suggested to-dos for the new Metrolinx boss as well 🚌 🚆 A few of mine would be (in no particular order) train stop/trip signage, more washrooms at stations, more customer service staff at stations, elevators that are in service more than they're out of service, investigating alternatives to the copious amounts of salt used for dicing at stations, and shelters at stations that folks can actually use for shelter. How about you? What needs changing at GO Transit? The most complex intersection of railroads in the world is at Sixth Ave and West 33 Street in Manhattan at the Manhattan Mall (former Gimbels). The lowest level is the LIRR to Penn Station since 1910, the second level is the PATH subway 33rd street terminal to Jersey since 1910, the third is the F, M, B, and D trains since the 1940s, street level were the trollies from 1832 to late 1950s, and above that was the Sixth Ave el 1878 till 1938. The Broadway subway is a few yards away too for the N, Q, R, and W trains. Seventh Ave has the 1, 2, and 3 trains around the block. Eighth Ave has the A, C, and E, plus you also have New Jersey Transit and Amtrak for long distance travels from Penn Station. The west side has it all within walking distance. For even more, walk or transfer for trains to the east side for Grand Central's Metro North Railroad, the LIRR, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 42nd street shuttle. #nyc #urbanhistory

Transport for Wales (TfW) has announced that it plans to electrify the Coryton and lower Rhymney lines over the next few weeks. , as it delivers the next phase of the South Wales Metro. This work is part of the South Wales Metro project, which will deliver 170km of electrified track. TfW said that 116km is already completed and ‘live’. With the upcoming electrification of the Coryton and lower Rhymney lines (from Caerphilly to Cardiff Queen Street), the total will rise to 155km. #railnews #railways #ukrail #rail 

This is not any old electrification, this is discontinuous electrification. A pioneering system developed by engineers from Amey, enabling dynamic Automatic Power Change Over. The novel system allows trains to raise and lower their pantographs on the move without having to spend £millions to raise bridges and tunnels or close surrounding roads while the work takes place.

It's hard to believe that it's been a little over 60 days since I started here at R. J. Corman. I want to thank each and every person, internally and externally, that has gone out of their way to help me get settled and welcomed me into this new role. I want to share one thing that I've learned very quickly. I think people often believe that shortline railroads generally only work on small projects and have limited opportunities along their lines. Not the case! Despite having a smaller footprint than our Class I railroad partners, shortlines still compete on large economic development projects by marketing quality rail-served sites along our lines. I've seen multiple examples of this already in my brief time here. From a $100MM+ investment in Winchester, KY to a $800MM+ investment in Fayetteville, NC, customers are investing significant capital into facilities along R. J. Corman lines. This is great news for us and the communities/regions that we serve. At R. J. Corman, we're currently working with many of our economic development partners to update our rail site/building database. This will allow us to better respond to direct inquiries from rail users, as well as focus our efforts when it comes to site readiness initiatives. We all know that you can't land a rail customer if you don't have any rail sites to show them! I look forward to being able to share the finished product with everyone soon. In the meantime, please reach out if you'd like to discuss rail-served options along our lines or have any suggestions on potential rail-served sites that we should look into further. Wouldn't this be cool? The High Speed Rail Alliance has identified critical corridors for high speed rail in the United States. It's no surprise that the Southeast is one of those. The Southeast has some of the fastest-growing and most culturally innovative cities in the country, including Atlanta, Miami, and Nashville. It also boasts scores of vibrant mid-sized communities like Asheville (NC), Greenville and Charleston (SC), and Chattanooga (TN). With its central location and rapid growth, Atlanta has immense promise as the heart of a regional and national high-speed rail network. (HSRA). With over 100,000,000 passengers in transit every year, Georgia (and Delta Air Lines) should lead this effort. #Highspeedrail #architecture #transportation

The London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) was formed on January 1, 1923, as part of the Railways Act 1921, which aimed to streamline and stabilize the rail industry in the United Kingdom. This formation marked the beginning of one of the 'Big Four' railway companies, alongside the Great Western Railway (GWR), the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS), and the Southern Railway (SR). The LNER was created by the amalgamation of several smaller railways, including the Great Northern Railway, the Great Eastern Railway, and the North Eastern Railway, among others. The creation of the LNER was a significant event in British railway history, as it consolidated numerous lines and resources, allowing for more efficient operations and better service for passengers and freight. The LNER operated across the eastern side of England and Scotland, covering major routes from London to Edinburgh and other key cities. Throughout its existence, the LNER was known for its high-speed services, luxurious passenger trains, and iconic locomotives, such as the Flying Scotsman and the Mallard, the latter holding the world speed record for steam locomotives. The LNER played a crucial role in the development and modernization of rail transport in the UK until it was nationalized in 1948, becoming part of British Railways.
