International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Nuclear Harmonization and Standardization Initiative (NHSI) Industrial Track Topical Group 2 "Common Approaches on Codes & Standards" just finalized its two-day hybrid meeting with participants from IAEA Member States and industrial partners on almost all continents. In the session of the picture, we discuss cooperation with NSHI Regulatory Track with Brett Rini. The group also discussed, for example: how to accelerate SMR long lead items, information collection from practices in the Member States on use of industrial grade items, role of non-nuclear codes & standards in standardizing SMRs, engineering code comparisons, advanced manufacturing in nuclear and several other topics including topics for continuation of work. ⚛️ Last week, Guido Gerra and Augustin Vaillant, alongside Simone Gianfelici from ENEA, participated in the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Technical Meeting on Severe Accident Analysis and Management for Non-Water Cooled Reactors. Japan is pioneering Sodium-Cooled Fast Reactor (#SFR) technology through a strategic roadmap initiated in 2022 by the Inter-Ministerial Council for Nuclear Power. The conceptual design of a demonstration reactor began in 2024, leveraging Japan's extensive experience in SFR technology. Key projects by the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA), including the experimental reactor #Joyo (operational since 1977) and the prototype reactor #Monju (since 1994), have significantly contributed to SFR advancements. Advanced design and safety evaluation efforts are driven by ARKADIA, an #AI-aided system that optimizes plant design and lifecycle evaluation by simulating operational scenarios and maintenance. The development of safety design requirements and codes specific to SFRs incorporates lessons from past experiences to enhance safety. Fuel cycle innovation focuses on advances in #fuelfabrication and reprocessing to improve efficiency and reduce waste toxicity. These efforts align with Japan's #sustainability goals, supporting decarbonization and energy security while promoting the efficient use of natural resources. Across the world, we see considerable progress in the recycling and disposing of nuclear fuel after it has been used to generate power. Spent fuel retains more than 90% of its potential energy even after 5 years of use in a nuclear power reactor. The International Conference on the Management of Spent Fuel from Nuclear Power Reactors #SFM24 taking place at the IAEA this week will facilitate discussions on national strategies for managing spent fuel, including from advanced technologies such as small modular reactors #SMRs, and how this supports an increased role for nuclear power in the global energy mix. At WM2024 Symposia in Phoenix (WM Symposia, Inc) in Phoenix, we delved into the intricate world of nuclear waste management. ☢️ Learning #2: "Embarking on a journey towards sustainable nuclear decommissioning, innovation and maximising reuse are the compasses guiding every step at SCK CEN.
