“Capturing Change: A Journey from Science to Design in the Fourth Industrial Revolution”
“In the midst of change, we often discover wings we never knew we had.” - Ekaterina Walter
While walking through a quaint, cobblestone street lined with charming boutiques, I stumbled upon a small photography studio with a sign that read “Moments Captured – Est. 1965.” Intrigued, I stepped inside and was greeted by an elderly woman with a warm smile and a camera slung around her neck.
We struck up a conversation, and she introduced herself as Mrs. Ayesha binte Akter, a photographer with over five decades of experience. Her studio walls were adorned with stunning black-and-white portraits, each telling a unique story.
As we chatted, she sighed and said, “You know, I’ve seen photography evolve in unimaginable ways. But now, with iPhones and mobile devices, everyone has a high-quality camera in their pocket. My business has taken a hit. People no longer seek out professional photographers like they used to.”
Her words resonated deeply with me. It was a stark reminder of how rapidly modern technologies are advancing and transforming industries. Mrs. Akter’s situation highlighted the urgent need for continuous learning and adaptation. As educators, it’s crucial to reskill and stay abreast of technological changes to remain relevant and effective.
This encounter underscored the main reason I have transformed from being a science teacher to a design teacher, and now a robotics instructor in international schools. The Fourth Industrial Revolution requires us to equip students with the skills necessary for a rapidly evolving technological landscape. We must embrace change, integrate new technologies into our teaching, and prepare our students for a future where interdisciplinary knowledge and innovative thinking are paramount.
Before I left, Mrs. Akter imparted a piece of wisdom, “Embrace change, learn new skills, and always find a way to adapt. That’s how we thrive in this ever-changing world.” Her resilience and adaptability were truly inspiring, underscoring the importance of lifelong learning in the face of technological advancement.
