"Of all funding available globally for civil society organisations, only 8% is channelled directly to local organisations, with the remaining 92% going to INGOs from the donor countries where those INGOs are headquartered. Looking at the statistics alone, you might wonder why local civil society organisations aren’t angrier about the scraps they’ve received for years, while the INGOs have grown fat on decades of funding meant for the ‘development’ of others". "What can INGO use instead of growth as a measure of success?" This Bond article is a must read.

Do you know what it takes to be successful with the Medical Research Future Fund (#MRFF)? 🤔 💭 Since 2015, the MRFF has changed the health and medical research funding landscape in #Australia. Net interest from this $20 billion fund is dedicated to targeted, priority-driven initiatives and commercialisation-focused projects. Funding opportunities are aligned with the MRFF Strategic Objectives and Priorities, as determined by the Australian Medical Research Advisory Board (AMRAB), and are directed at 4 broad themes: (1) patients 🩺 (2) research missions 🔬 (3) researchers 👩🏽🔬 and (4) research translation 🧬 As of March 2024, the majority of MRFF funds ($1.76b) have been awarded for ‘targeted/restricted competitive’ rounds, open to a small number of potential grantees based on the specialised requirements of the grant activity. Another $972M has been awarded to ‘open competitive’ rounds, where all eligible applications are assessed against the nominated selection criteria. Overall funding rates are at 54% for targeted/restrictive and 30% for open competitive schemes – although this rate varies dramatically depending on the specific opportunity - e.g., the 2021 EMCR round had an abysmal 5.4% funding rate 😧 When applying, note that the MRFF provides grant proposal templates that are specific to each opportunity – and many opportunities have multiple streams with varied requirements. So our #number1tip is to read the guidelines carefully! We also recommend strong cohesion across the application, ensuring that it tells a clear, simple story that addresses the objectives of the opportunity. A highly innovative project, for example, might score highly against the Project Impact criterion; however, this risk must be offset by a strong risk management strategy to meet the MRFF’s guidelines regarding overall project value. Open and pending MRFF rounds are listed on their website - https://lnkd.in/g72yU65V Consulting & Implementation Services (CIS) has considerable experience in supporting research teams to successfully gain and leverage MRFF funding.
