Consider this powerful quote from a report on an innovative gathering of STEM stakeholders by the AAAS with support from the National Science Foundation (NSF). "Even when STEM departments and instructors commit to more equitable and research-based teaching methods, how do they know these changes are making a difference and that the assessments reflect departmental values and the instructor’s stated goals? Do they know why students took the class in the first place and whether or not they have achieved their own personal goals? In other words, is it possible to relate student learning to student values and their academic and career goals?"
