Dedicated to evolving #STEM career pathways? Consider this powerful quote from a report on an innovative gathering of STEM stakeholders by the AAAS with support from the National Science Foundation (NSF). "Even when STEM departments and instructors commit to more equitable and research-based teaching methods, how do they know these changes are making a difference and that the assessments reflect departmental values and the instructor’s stated goals? Do they know why students took the class in the first place and whether or not they have achieved their own personal goals? In other words, is it possible to relate student learning to student values and their academic and career goals?" Our culturally responsive approaches to program evaluation can get at these questions and help departmental leaders understand who the learners are that come to their program. "Why do I need to find a class that interests me at each college I research," a student asked me. Many high schoolers may wonder this, but my job as a college consultant is to explain why delving into course offerings and finding interesting classes is essential. By learning about course offerings, students get to know a particular institution's specific culture, teaching style, and opportunities; they better understand a college's academic environment and can picture themselves in that context. The process helps students gauge if that institution is a 'fit' for them—a complex mixture of their academic interests, social preferences, and career goals. When I work with students, I help them navigate this research. I guide them to engage in a deeper exploration of universities, thereby helping them make informed decisions. When my student understood that this research would empower them to choose a college where they would thrive academically, they were more willing to engage. And I was excited to see them take this step. By applying wisely, building confidence, and getting it right, I help students on their journey to college admission success. Helping all students navigate college admissions. Working with them to think broadly, apply wisely, learn, graduate and make the world a more just place.
Harvey Mudd College is a private college focusing on science, engineering, and mathematics. Located in Claremont, California, it is part of the Claremont Colleges consortium, which includes five undergraduate and two graduate institutions. Harvey Mudd is known for its strong emphasis on both STEM education and a broad liberal arts foundation, ensuring that its graduates are not only experts in their technical fields but also well-rounded individuals with a wide perspective on world issues. Harvey Mudd offers a unique curriculum that combines rigorous STEM education with the liberal arts. The college believes in producing engineers, scientists, and mathematicians who are well-versed in the humanities, social sciences, and the arts. As a result, all students have a “concentration” in a liberal arts discipline. The college fosters a collaborative and non-competitive environment. Students are encouraged to work together on problem sets and projects, creating a community where teamwork and mutual support are integral to academic success. There is a student-led Honor Code—exams are not proctored and can be taken in the library or dorms. Harvey Mudd provides its undergraduates with significant research opportunities. Students often work alongside faculty members on cutting-edge research projects. Each summer the college hires 200 students for summer research projects. The senior capstone project, known as the Clinical, connects students with real-world companies and organizations to solve professional-level problems. This not only gives students hands-on experience but also exposes them to industry challenges and practices. Harvey Mudd has a strong track record of alumni success, with graduates being highly sought after by employers and often continuing to top graduate schools. In fact, the college is known for being among the top in the nation for sending students on to PhD programs Harvey Mudd automatically considers students for merit aid, is need-blind for U.S. citizens and permanent residents, and meets 100% of students' demonstrated financial need. By applying wisely, building confidence, and getting it right, I help students on their journey to college admission success. Did you know that the choice between a college and a university can have a significant impact on your educational journey? 📚 Colleges typically offer hands-on training and shorter, career-focused programs like diplomas and certificates, making them ideal for students who want to enter the workforce quickly. Universities, on the other hand, are often known for academic research and offer bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees, providing a more in-depth, theoretical education. Choosing the right path depends on your career goals and learning style. Both options offer unique opportunities for students to thrive! 🌟 #HigherEducation #CollegeVsUniversity #EducationMatters

"I am worried my grades will keep me out of all the colleges my parents consider 'good enough,'" a student recently shared. Navigating the pressures of familial expectations while maintaining academic aspirations can be challenging. However, it's important to remember that a 'good' college is not defined solely by its rank or prestige but by how well it aligns with a student's personal and academic goals. When I work with students, I help students, and their families, understand this critical perspective. The focus should not be on chasing a label but on finding an institution that provides the right environment for the student to thrive. We discuss the importance of college attributes like curriculum, faculty, resources, student life, and career support. These are essential for a fulfilling college experience and are not necessarily correlated with grades alone. It is gratifying to assist students and families in shifting their focus from prestige to personal fit and witnessing their relief and newfound excitement about the college process. It's a rewarding journey, reaffirming my commitment to helping students find their college match. By applying wisely, building confidence, and getting it right, I help students on their journey to college admission success.
