Lessons from Every City #19
Wolf Point, MT---Reflecting on my travels across the country, delving into America's multiculturalism and the assimilation versus accommodation debate, I often ponder the roads I've journeyed. Picture a society where individuals can create their own rules without a shared value system and apply that to our roads – chaos would ensue. During my drive through Montana, the prevalence of road fatalities struck me, evidenced by crosses every 100 meters. Drunk driving and speeding are rampant, compounded by numerous accidents caused by animal crossings.
Assimilation is a crucial aspect of coexistence, much like the rules that govern our roads. In some areas of life, assimilation is necessary to build relationships and ensure harmony. America's diversity makes it a fascinating place to travel, where individuals from around the world come together with a common goal.
I am a proponent of acculturation, where individuals adapt to the prevailing culture while retaining the freedom to practice their own. My father, a first-generation immigrant, assimilated instantly to succeed in the business world. On the other hand, his family, refugees reluctant to give up their culture, chose a different path.
Some communities struggle with minimal assimilation efforts, creating disconnection. When the majority accommodates diversity without integration, two worlds remain apart. In my humble opinion, I think America should remain to have a common language. Just as in the workplace, everyone shares a common mission. And, most importantly, we all have to abide by the rules of the road for the safety and protection of others.
