What if Gen Z have actually got it right? I had a fascinating discussion with Charlotte Neser yesterday from Beyond Your Career who provides extremely thought provoking programmes for senior directors and parnters who are considering how they invest their time in the future following on form full time work? My dad ended up running a group of hospitals and when there was another round of reorganisations he took early retirement from the NHS after 30 years, at the age of 59 and overnight he stopped everything - all the meetings, crisis management, politics, challenges, surgeons, medical team discussions and engaging with the guys who kept the heating on and ran the porter service. People rarely do that now. A change from DB to DC pensions, a need to work longer and not least the fact that most people born in the 20's and 30's had a life expectancy of 70 years at best! So you retired, enjoyed 10 years and then died. But now, especially for partners in professional services - after a career defining who you are by what you do for others... how are you going to fill your days? It's unlikely that golf alone will fill that void... And that is where Charlotte and her firm provide some thought provoking options. Its a tremendous programme where she draws on the experience of those who throw themselves into a series of NED roles and others who have chosen a path less busy! Gen Z will probably find the transition much easier because many are living a more balanced life and avoid focussing 100% on work to define who they are. I would encourage anyone who has partners in the middle of Q3 (50-75 years of age) to get in touch and learn more.
