Day in and day out, physicians battle for individual patients. But what if instead of fighting each and every battle, physicians could win the war to serve all patients? This is exactly what Dr. David Charles , Chief Medical Officer at Alliance for Patient Access (APA) and the organization advocates for. The APA has one major goal driving its efforts: To train clinicians to be advocates for patients in a way that changes policy. By channeling their energy into challenging insurer policies and laws at the state and federal levels, the organization leverages physicians and their expertise to change systems to better serve patients. The efforts of physicians have led to groundbreaking changes such as response time requirements for insurers in regards to prior authorization. The American Medical Association recently held its Annual Meeting. Unsurprisingly, prior authorization processes were among the key discussion points. Prior authorization is an often-frustrating process that physicians and other healthcare professionals face regularly. The lack of information included in denial letters is particularly concerning, according to an AMA Council on Medical Service report adopted at the Annual Meeting.
