Can some early THA revisions be avoided? Novikov et al in 2019 concluded that “A surprisingly large proportion of acute revision THAs are potentially avoidable". Of a total of 60 revisions (51.3%) were potentially avoidable, as defined by Shackford et al. All of these avoidable revisions were caused by either suboptimal cup positioning, intraoperative fracture, early aseptic loosening or gross implant under-sizing with subsidence of the femoral component, or leg length discrepancies (>1cm)¹.
