I was out checking corn this week to determine when to start harvesting silage. One of the ways we approximate harvest date is by cob maturity. Generally, once the kernels mature to 1/2 milk line, the cob will be dry enough (around 35% DM) to harvest and have accumulated more starch. Interesting, however, the variety we were scouting had kernels at various stages maturity. Some kernels are dented while others are still in dough. This may be an indication of uneven pollination. Of current importance, it makes assessing harvest timelines more difficult. Chipping stalks or chopping test loads may be a more accurate option this year to determine whole plant dry matter.

Uniform corn stands are crucial for achieving high yields. Each seed must be planted at the same depth and spacing as its neighbors. Inconsistent spacing can hinder plant growth, preventing them from reaching their full potential. #FarmingTips #AgricultureInsights 🌱🌾🚜
