During the beginning of Sales career in the office automation industry, I always heard the following lines: Shape up or shape out. If you do not perform, you will get the kiss of a death! Many of my colleagues felt that the organization was unfair. The leaders were unduly aggressive. They left or worked reluctantly. However, we, a rather small group of freshers, thought that there was wisdom in the above lines. We started the following: We bagan to reinvent ourselves. We polished our Sales skills. We improved our communication skills. Above all, we started thinking big. We loved meeting stretch targets. What was the result? We earned huge incentives and rewards. 🟦 Sales is often cited as one of the most critical skills in business (both B2B and B2C segments). But how do you really learn it? A few months ago, I was given an incredible opportunity -leading a strategic project that stretched across multiple domains: SEO, DBMS, CMS, UI/UX design, and, of course, product management. However, a critical element that emerged unexpectedly was building a sales team from scratch. This meant everything from hiring freshers to training and nurturing them, and ultimately, equipping them to perform in the field. It was an exciting yet complex challenge with many moving parts. Once the team was trained, they were deployed to engage with customers directly, and that’s when the real challenges began. Despite all the preparation, they encountered several roadblocks in the sales process and convincing the consumer. 🏃 That’s when I realized the only way to truly understand the challenges was to be out there myself. By joining them in the field and interacting with customers, I could identify critical gaps in our approach. This firsthand experience gave me insights to optimize the sales process and support my team more effectively, ensuring they were set up for success. Key Lessons from the Field: 1. Sales is learned by doing, not by giving instructions in your chamber: Being on the ground provides invaluable insights into customer pain points, use cases, and different nuances. 2. Product knowledge is non-negotiable: To inspire trust and credibility, you need to be the subject matter expert. A deep understanding of every feature, functionality, and use case of your product is essential. Only then can you anticipate and address any concerns or objections from your customers. 3. Be prepared to fail – and fail often: No matter how confident or knowledgeable you are, setbacks are inevitable. But every failure brings valuable feedback, helping you learn and understand the customers better. In summary, my journey has taught me that while sales is a crucial skill, mastering it requires a continuous loop of learning, feedback, and adaptation.
