In-depth study conducted within a large Asian technology company sheds significant light on the impact of hybrid working from home on employee productivity and satisfaction was recently published in Nature. The study, encompassing 1,612 employees, delved into the effects of hybrid working, a blend of remote and on-site work, on various facets of employee engagement. Group involved managers and non-managers, group has diverse commute time, all of them have a university undergraduate degree. Contrary to prevailing concerns about reduced performance in a home environment, the results revealed no notable difference in the lines of code submitted by computer-engineer employees, dispelling doubts about productivity levels. The study indicated a remarkable one-third reduction in quit rates, highlighting the allure of flexible work models in retaining talent within organizations. There were 2 additional standout findings: 1. The significant improvement in job satisfaction among employees engaged in hybrid working arrangements. 2. Managerial Perception Shift: An intriguing observation emerged as managers' attitudes towards hybrid working evolved throughout the study. Initially skeptical about its impact on productivity, managers transitioned from perceiving a negative effect to a positive one post-experiment, showcasing a newfound appreciation for the benefits of working from home. Substantiating Beliefs with Data: Noteworthy was the employees' pre-experimental beliefs about the impact of hybrid working on productivity. The study revealed a varied spectrum of expectations, with a baseline mean of -0.1%. Post-experiment, the mean belief saw a significant increase to 1.5%, signifying a modest but tangible boost in average employee perceptions regarding the productivity effects of hybrid working. Short resume: 1. no drop in productivity, performance review and promotions. 2. one-third reduction in quit rates 3. improved job satisfaction 4. managers changed their mind across study from "negative" towards "positive" attitude regarding WFM. Study was published June 2024, Nature. I believe for other tech companies results would strongly depends on culture.
