Did you ever provide a reference to a potential employer that turned out to be a mistake? References can play a pivotal role in landing that dream job. Here’s three tips to ensure you secure solid and effective #references: TIP #1: CHOOSE THE RIGHT PEOPLE 🔸 Knows you well professionally: Choose someone who has directly observed your work and can speak confidently about your abilities (i.e. former supervisor, a colleague, a mentor, or even a client). 🔸 Has a positive opinion of you: Although this seems intuitive, sometimes references may be scarce. Regardless, it’s crucial to select someone who thinks highly of you and will recommend you enthusiastically. 🔸 Is articulate and reliable: Ensure your references can communicate effectively and articulate specific examples of your strengths and accomplishments if asked. TIP #2: TAKE THE RIGHT APPROACH 🔸 Personalize your request: Whether you’re sending an email, calling or asking in person, tailor your approach. Remind them of your shared experiences or the projects you worked on together. 🔸 Be clear and respectful: Explain why you’re reaching out, what the role entails and why they would be an excellent reference for this position. Respect their time and understand if they cannot fulfill your request. 🔸 Provide necessary information: If they agree to be your reference, provide them with all the necessary information about the job you’re applying for, your recent resume, and any specific skills or experiences you would like them to highlight. TIP #3: MAINTAIN THE RELATIONSHIP 🔸 Keep them updated: Inform your references about the progress of your job search and let them know when a potential employer might contact them. 🔸 Show appreciation: Regardless of the outcome, thank your references for their time and support. A simple thank you note or email can go a long way. 🔸 Stay in touch: Maintain the relationship even after your job search ends. #Networking is an ongoing process, and you never know when you might need their assistance again or when you can help them. Remember, a strong reference can be the deciding factor in securing that next great opportunity. #CornerStoneProfessionalPlacement #careergoals

The Art of Cultivating Work References References play a key role in your career journey, so be intentional in who you ask and how you engage with them. 🧐 Target managers and colleagues who know your strengths well through high-quality work. Contingent Workforce Consultant @ Kelly OGS/Enbridge 💻 All About That Candidate Experience & Process Improvement ✨
🔍 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐀𝐮𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐑𝐞𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐂𝐚𝐧 𝐌𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐨𝐫 𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐤 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐉𝐨𝐛 𝐒𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 🔍 In today’s hiring process, references aren’t just a formality; they’re a crucial piece of the job placement puzzle. They give employers a backstage pass to your work ethic, skills, and how well you fit within a team. But, heads up! Many companies now use advanced reference-checking software that’s so high-tech, it can track IP addresses like a digital detective (to check authenticity). This means if you're thinking of asking a friend to give you a positive reference, the system might flag it 🚩, which could raise concerns about credibility and potentially impact your chances of landing future jobs within a company. The best way to proceed is to try (try being the key word here) to maintain connections with your former managers and colleagues, even if your departure from the company was tough. These relationships can offer support and advocacy when you need it most. Remember, your experience and skills are truly valuable, and authentic references will reflect that. Another nugget of wisdom: always give your references a heads-up before you list them. I’ve called references who were more surprised to be on the list than a cat in a dog show! By preparing them in advance, you’re ensuring they can provide thoughtful and accurate feedback, which can be crucial in the hiring process. Honestly, a heartfelt but practical reference from someone who genuinely knows your work can truly make all the difference in securing your next opportunity. ✨ #JobSearch #References #jobinterviews

🔑 Importance of Professionalism in the Job Search Process 🔑 Dear LinkedIn Connections, Today, I wanted to discuss a topic that holds great significance in our careers - the importance of maintaining professionalism during the job search process. 🌱 As job seekers, we all strive for knowledge-wise growth and financial growth. It's only natural to explore multiple opportunities and consider different offers before making a final decision. However, once you have accepted an offer from a company, it is crucial to honor that commitment and act in a professional manner. 🚀 Unfortunately, we have come across instances where candidates have accepted offers but continued to search for other opportunities. This has led to situations where candidates do not receive calls or fail to report to work on the agreed-upon start date. Such actions not only reflect poorly on your professional reputation but also create a negative impression on potential employers. 🤝 We urge you to consider the impact of your actions and the potential consequences they may have on your professional future. If you find yourself in a situation where you have accepted an offer but are still considering other opportunities, we encourage you to communicate openly with the companies involved. Dropping a polite email or making a phone call to explain the circumstances can go a long way in maintaining professional relationships. 💼 Companies understand that circumstances can change, and they are often willing to work with candidates to find a suitable solution. By reaching out and explaining your concerns, you may find that the company is willing to extend your joining date or accommodate your needs in some way. 📢 Remember, maintaining open and honest communication is key to building a strong professional reputation. It is essential to treat all parties involved with respect and professionalism throughout the hiring process. 🌟 Thank you for taking the time to read this message. We hope that you will consider the importance of professionalism and make informed decisions that align with your career goals. #ProfessionalismMatters #CareerGrowth #JobSearchEtiquette #OpenCommunication

Three Tips for How to Ask People to Be References References can play a pivotal role in landing that dream job as they give potential employers a glimpse into your work ethic, character, and professional accomplishments. However, asking someone to be a reference can sometimes feel awkward. These three tips can help streamline the process and ensure you secure solid and effective references. TIP #1️⃣: Choose the right people - The ideal reference is someone who: ✅ Knows you well professionally: Choose someone who has directly observed your work and can speak confidently about your skills, achievements, and work ethic (i.e. former supervisor, a colleague, a mentor, or even a client). ✅ Has a positive opinion of you: It’s crucial to select people who think highly of you and are likely to recommend you enthusiastically. ✅ Is articulate and reliable: Ensure your references can communicate effectively and articulate specific examples of your strengths and accomplishments. TIP #2️⃣: Make a thoughtful approach -How you ask is just as important as who you ask. When reaching out: ✅ Personalize your request: Whether you’re sending an email, making a phone call, or asking in person, tailor your approach. Remind them of your shared experiences or the projects you worked on together. ✅ Be clear and respectful: Explain why you’re reaching out and what the role entails. Tell them why they would be an excellent reference for this position. Respect their time and understand if they cannot fulfill your request. ✅ Provide necessary information: If they agree to be your reference, provide them with all the necessary information about the job you’re applying for, your recent resume, and any specific skills or experiences you would like them to highlight. TIP #3️⃣: Maintain the relationship - Keeping the relationship active with your reference is essential. ✅ Keep them updated: Inform your references about the progress of your job search. Let them know when a potential employer might contact them. ✅ Show appreciation: Regardless of the outcome, thank your references for their time and support. A simple thank-you note or email can go a long way. ✅ Stay in touch: Maintain the relationship even after your job search ends. Networking is an ongoing process, and you never know when you might need their assistance again or when you can help them. Asking for references is a crucial step in your job search and should be considered carefully. A strong reference can be the deciding factor in securing that next great opportunity.

References 📲 This can be a touchy subject depending on who you speak to because unfortunately, not everyone leaves a work place on the best terms. References are also people, and people have feelings, and sometimes those people can have biases that may work against you in your job search (without you even knowing it). So, how do you pick the right people to represent you as a reference? 💥 Select Relevant Contacts: Choose individuals who can speak positively about your work ethic, skills, and accomplishments. Ideal references include former supervisors, colleagues, professors, or mentors (highly dependent on your level of work experience). 💥 Request their Assistance and Give Notice: Reach out to your potential references well in advance and ask if they are willing to be a reference for you. If they consent, inform your references when you have applied for a job and there is a chance they might be contacted. Provide details about the company and position. 💥 Diverse Perspectives: Select references from different roles and contexts to give a well-rounded view of your abilities and experiences. If getting references is easy for you, congratulations! If you're having a hard time with it, try reconnecting with an old colleague and having an honest conversation about where your career is and if they'd be interested in helping you out. Sometimes a coffee or lunch is enough to pursuade them. Good luck out there 👊 #Recruitment #References #JobSearch
