⭐Damp and Mould Awareness Week⭐ ✨28th October-3rd November✨ Preventing damp and mould is more affordable and time efficient than trying to repair the damage caused by it. Most of the options are free or very pocket friendly; 🩷 Opening your windows and/or doors. These don't need to be open all the time, but often enough to draw the moisture out of your home. 🩷 There are some key times when you should be opening a window- following a shower or whilst cooking and leave the window open for a while after. You can also cover pots and pans to prevent excessive steam. 🩷 Also, when you get up in the morning as the outside of your house gets a lot colder during the night causing the moisture from the warm air within your home to settle on colder surfaces. 🩷 Cross ventilation (opening windows on opposite sides of your house) can draw the moisture through faster and reduce condensation. 🩵 Installing and proper use of ventilation systems which will consistently ventilate your property throughout the day and night, usually with minimal (if any) effort from you. 🩵 There are many different types of systems such as extractor fans, extractor hoods, dehumidifiers and trickling vents 💛 Ensuring your home is adequately heated will help to dry any condensation, but be aware that the moisture drying off of surfaces is going into the air, so ventilation is key. 💛 Keeping the heat inside your home with insulation. Ensure the insulation in your attic is of the correct thickness and whether you home would benefit from cavity wall insulation. 💛 Drying washing outside as often as possible, or at the very least, following all ventilation advice to reduce the moisture remaining in your home from drying washing. 💜 Damp proofing, while more expensive than the previous suggestions, may be essential if your home has rising damp and would have major benefits in the long term. 💜Checking the exterior of your house for any cracks/damage which may be letting moisture in. It isn't always feasible to do this yourself and you may need to hire a contractor. 💜 Checking guttering and downspouts for any defects, breaks or blockages as this can direct water into your home. 💜 Checking where water from your house is draining to- that water run off from the roof is making it to the correct drain and that waste water from your home isn't leaking. 💚 Whilst houseplants have many benefits to your health, they transpire which will increase condensation. The water you feed to them will also evaporate into the air. 💚 You can monitor the humidity levels within your home using a hygrometer, this will enable you to know the best times to open windows, switch on extractor fans etc, or identify the main moisture making activities in your home. Research highlights the importance of keeping humidity within the optimal range of 30-50%. And here’s why: 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘀: 1. 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗛𝘂𝗺𝗶𝗱𝗶𝘁𝘆: Promotes the growth of mold, dust mites, and other allergens. This can aggravate respiratory conditions like asthma and allergies. Additionally, high humidity can lead to skin infections and worsen symptoms for people with chronic respiratory issues. 2. 𝗟𝗼𝘄 𝗛𝘂𝗺𝗶𝗱𝗶𝘁𝘆: Can cause dry skin, irritated eyes, and respiratory discomfort. Prolonged exposure to low humidity can result in the drying out of mucous membranes, increasing the risk of respiratory infections and making it harder for the body to expel viruses and bacteria. High humidity can make indoor environments more conducive to the proliferation of bacteria and viruses, while low humidity can result in increased dust and static electricity. 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀: 1. 𝗨𝘀𝗲 𝗛𝘂𝗺𝗶𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗿𝘀/𝗗𝗲𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗶𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗿𝘀: These devices are essential for maintaining balanced humidity levels. In the winter, humidifiers can add moisture when indoor air tends to dry. In the summer, or in damp climates, dehumidifiers can help remove excess moisture. 2. 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴: Invest in hygrometers to keep track of indoor moisture levels. This includes volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from cleaning agents and harmful microbes from improper air circulation. Reference: ASHRAE Standard 62.2, which mandates ventilation systems to maintain indoor air quality and remove contaminants from enclosed spaces. Control of Humidity 2.Moisture build-up fosters mold and mildew, which release spores that can trigger allergies or worsen asthma. Poor humidity control is a leading cause of long-term air quality issues. Reference: ASHRAE Standard 62.1 specifies recommended humidity levels (30%-60%) to prevent microbial growth. 3.Prevention of Structural Damage Excess moisture damages walls, paint, and fixtures, weakening structural integrity over time.
