As we celebrate International Women in Engineering Day today, I reflect on my journey as a woman engineer, and the barriers and challenges I faced along the way. We all have a role to play in breaking down barriers. Here are a few things you can do to help create a more inclusive engineering profession: · Be a mentor: Encourage young women interested in STEM by showing them that they can succeed. Your support means more than you think. · Be kind: Let’s lead with empathy. Not only is it the right thing to do, but it also fosters a positive environment that enhances team performance. · Create networks: Help create networks where women can be supported, guided and mentored. These connections are invaluable for personal and professional growth. · Invest in yourself: Develop a plan for your goals and aspirations. I am a believer of life-long learning, so continuous self-development is crucial in advancing your career and achieving your dreams. Things are changing, but not enough nor fast enough. We can do better, and we must do better. Let’s make a difference together! #INWED2024 #EnhancedByEngineering

Throughout my career, I've had the privilege of witnessing firsthand the remarkable potential of those aspiring for a career in STEM, regardless of gender. However, I've also seen how societal norms and stereotypes can limit the aspirations of young girls, deterring them from pursuing their passions, particularly in engineering. ❗That's why initiatives like Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day are so vital. They provide a platform for girls to explore their interests, envision themselves as future engineers and innovators, AND urge people to encourage more girls in the first place. Role models are vital, but so are support networks that remind you that anything is possible, and what was historically looked on as a "man's job" can be done just as well by a woman. By investing in their potential today, we're shaping a more diverse and resilient workforce for tomorrow. Here's to inspiring the next generation of female engineers and leaders! 💡 #IntroduceAGirlToEngineering #STEM #DiversityInTech #WomenInEngineering #Mentorship #Empowerment

Today, on International Women in Engineering Day, we celebrate the talented and trailblazing women in this vital sector. But it’s also an opportunity to reflect on the sobering reality that still only 16.5% of engineers are women. There are, of course, many reasons for the shortfall, but the statistic absolutely underscores the important role engineering businesses play in changing the status quo and fostering a more inclusive and equitable environment that nurtures a diverse workforce and attracts more females into this rewarding and exciting career. At IAAPS, we recognise the immense talent and potential women bring to engineering. Despite facing the same challenges as our peers, we are committed to breaking down barriers and ensuring women feel supported and empowered to thrive in their engineering careers. We have introduced several initiatives to actively promote gender diversity, from refining our recruitment practices and increasing the representation of women in senior leadership roles to engaging strong male advocates and allies who can uplift and champion our female colleagues. Together, we are making progress, step by step, and we are determined to continue these strides. With that said, we are excited to spotlight Molly Baria, our new work experience engineer who joined IAAPS for an eight-week placement last Monday, eager to gain more technical and hands-on experience in the industry. Molly, a 22-year-old Aerospace Engineering student at the University of Bath, has had an interest in engineering since early childhood. Inspired by her grandfather and father, a Mechanical Engineer, she is determined to break away from the stigma that women cannot excel in male-dominated sectors. Her advice to fellow young female engineers embarking on their careers: “It’s important to be aware that there is a high chance of experiencing imposter syndrome, but don’t let this stop you from pursuing your desired career path. It may not always be easy, but you will gain the strength you need to work through any challenges – and the outcome will be incredibly rewarding.” Welcome to IAAPS, Molly. You are a fantastic role model! #INWED2024 #WomenInEngineering #DiversityAndInclusion #EngineeringExcellence #BreakingDownBarriers #EmpowerHer

A week ago I was sitting in a large conference room with about 500 women engineer / college students, listening to the stories of the speakers and attendees as they navigate their engineering journey. It was inspiring to hear all the successes and see the resilience of the women who were attending. So many had been told to pursue a career better suited for women. 😡 Listening to the humor some used to combat self-doubt and imposter syndrome was encouraging. It's great to see how women are handling the challenges they face in male-dominated worlds. It would be great to hear that these problems no longer exist. Unfortunately we aren't there, YET. I talked to women who are at organizations who are actively striving to hire more women in key roles, at all levels, which is fantastic. There were lots of discussions about how to encourage more young girls to pursue engineering, which is another needed step. The biggest plus that I saw was the number of women who were openly and actively encouraging, supporting, and cheering on other women. For there to be more women in engineering, and STEM as a whole, we need to be helping each other rise. As you grow your career, look around for others who will make you better, who support you, encourage you, and help lift all women up. You are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with. Choose wisely. Look for others to help you grow and those you can help grow. If you would like support in taking your career to the next level, I'm here for you. It's my passion to help women in STEM build the career they've always wanted, that works for them. Reach out and I'll send you the next steps.

🌟 Empowering Women in UK Engineering 🌟 Attracting more women into engineering roles in the UK is not just a goal; it's a necessity for a balanced and innovative future. But how do we encourage more women to join this dynamic field? Firstly, we need to start early. Encouraging girls to pursue STEM subjects from a young age is crucial. Schools and universities must actively promote engineering as a viable and exciting career path for women. Mentorship programmes can play a significant role here, providing young women with role models and guidance from those already thriving in the industry. Secondly, companies must foster an inclusive culture. This means not only hiring more women but also ensuring they have the support and opportunities to advance. Flexible working arrangements, robust parental leave policies, and clear pathways for career progression are essential. At UPP, we excel in identifying leaders who can drive such cultural transformations within their organisations. Lastly, visibility matters. Celebrating the achievements of women in engineering and showcasing their contributions can inspire the next generation. By highlighting success stories and creating platforms for women to share their experiences, we can break down stereotypes and build a more inclusive industry. Together, let's create a future where women are equally represented in engineering. 💪🔧🌍 #WomenInEngineering #STEM #DiversityInTech
