I am immensely proud of this document I wrote with Polly Sharman following a project that we undertook with schools in Kent through The Education People The purpose was to support EYFS educators in how to design and create their own Curriculum that supported and enabled the aspirations of the EYFS. The focus of the project was on the process involved and how this fine tuned the reflection of both the children it served and the Educators that delivered it. There were no templates nor prescriptions but the intricate and individualised knowledge of the educators themselves and how the curriculum reflected this and their values / aspirations for children. This is work I am increasingly doing with schools, MATs and PVI Settings – both in the UK and Internationally – and when we begin to conceptualise Curriculum there are always several aspects that invariably strike me. First of all, a Curriculum is grown not given. The design and creation of the Curriculum has to belong to the educators as only they have the intricate knowledge to adapt reflect and refine the sequencing and deepening of learning in response to empowering their cohort of children. No one can successfully impose this externally Secondly it is the process not the final documentation that is significant and authentic. The levels of discussion, reflection and adaptation that I always encounter reaffirms my belief in the potency and intellectual depth that Educators bring with them – often subconsciously – to their role. However this is finally represented is always secondary to the deep thinking that has occurred. All the most effective ECE Curricula is internalised not scripted and a clear process enables educators to articulate their craft and aspirations effectively. Thirdly, we inevitably focus on the role of Learning Behaviours and how these run through the Curriculum both as an enabler of access to knowledge and skills, but also how this provides a intrinsic purpose for what is learned. Lilian Katz referred to this as ‘Intellectual Pursuit’ and this is a phrase that should be inscribed on all ECE Curricula. Finally, the purpose of any Curriculum is the impact it has and how children make progress as a result. Refining the nature of this and being able to fine tune their personal Pedagogical Repertoires follows seamlessly and achieves that Holy Grail of ECE practice – confident articulate educators who have a clear sense of why they are doing what they do and how this will be achieved, especially within the context of how unique cohorts and individual children are. Given the challenges that EYFS educators face and the ongoing debates about how we provide the best possible start for children, and indeed what that consists of, understanding how we construct a Curriculum on this basis is the fundamental starting point.

This is a piece of advice I want to give to all those who are currently pursuing their Graduation. Ignoring textbook especially during your Graduation will only give you less knowledge. Try to earn more knowledge from those textbooks mentioned in your #syllabus than getting half of the knowledge from online courses. Why I am stressing about this is, knowledge that you gain from textbooks will help you to build something on your own. So, rely on online learning only if you take it as reference and not as your encyclopaedia. Textbook is your Encyclopaedia so give first preference to them. #text_books_are_your_encyclopaedia
