Below is a podcast from a wonderful leader from my past. I will tell you all much more about Janice Allen Jackson when I can get her appreciation post done. She’s amazing. For now, I’ll provide some high level info on Janice. Janice is back in her hometown of Augusta, GA after a distinguished career in local government. She hosts a podcast called Local Matters that covers issue of importance in Augusta and surrounding areas. Since I left CaroMont, I’ve had my hands in a few things. One is working with Thomas Barber on developing a program for young people that are aging out of foster care. At the moment, programs are sparse, and a lot of young people fall through the cracks. We are doing some fact finding to identify how we can affect change in the Charlotte area. Janice’s interview with Dr. Jackson Drumgoole is eye opening. He is doing life changing work for young people in the foster care system in Augusta. While there are many possible root causes such as overpolicing in communities of color, criminalization of poverty, foster parents that see foster care as a revenue stream, and so on, there are not many solutions. Dr. Drumgoole has recognized the need and is doing what few do. He’s tackling the issue head on. I started to type in all the ways he’s doing that, but I’d say give the podcast a listen. What I will address is something that came up a couple of times in the podcast. Janice asked whether children aging out of foster care have father figures they can turn to. Many foster children do not. This is where I feel lucky. If not for my dad, I could’ve easily slipped through the cracks despite having a lot of advantages that foster children simply do not have. This story is sadly true. In the spring of ‘91 (at 18 years old), I flunked out of community college. I wish I was joking. The only thing that got me back on track was my dad. He gave me tough love, guidance, and direction. Otherwise, I genuinely have no idea where I would be today. If I were in foster care, odds are high I would be in prison. That’s why this is such a big deal. I feel like, at some point, we all have to make difficult and life defining decisions. If there is no one to help you make those decisions, to tell you that they believe in you, and to help you find the path forward, those decisions go from being difficult to being terrifying. Many of those decisions end up with poor outcomes. Dr. Drumgoole has identified a way forward that will literally save lives, and give kids in foster care a way to become more than another foster care to prison statistic. The podcast is powerful. I hope you’ll give it a listen.
Is there a Foster Care to Prison Pipeline? Dr. Jackson Drumgoole joins us to discuss the particular challenges of young people aging out of foster care. Bridge Builder Communities is now developing a tiny home community to address their needs. We discuss the trauma foster children experience, the consequences of that trauma, how important fathers are, and what can be done to give these young people a chance to create a better life. More than 30 percent of youth and families in our program are – or have been – involved in foster care. Our Friends work hard to make sure that youth in foster care – or youth at-risk of care - and their caregivers have their needs met. Friends average five contacts each month with caregivers and facilitate connection to concrete resources in times of need. 92% of caregivers in our program report that Friends connected them to resources that stabilized their families. #PutChildrenFirst #FosterOurFuture
