I see job seekers today making the same mistakes I made 10+ years ago. (Here’s how I fixed them and so can you). Earlier in my career, I was trying 100 different things to advance and yet nothing was working. Then over lunch one day, a good friend of mine helped me realize what was keeping me stuck and it was so obvious: She told me: “Everyone that is where you want to be, was once where you are today. The reason you’re not seeing the same results as them is because you’re trying to apply the same steps they did, but you’re applying them out of order. It’s like having the ingredients without the recipe.” She was 100% right. I went back to the drawing board, re-examined everything and figured out: - What steps others took - What order they took them in - How they executed each step If your job search isn’t going well right now, I know 3 things: - You don’t need to recreate the wheel - You don’t need more information, either. - You need to know how to apply the information in the right sequential order.

When preparing for an industry job search, organize your tasks into three groups: steps to begin your search, refine your search, and complete before applying. Here are two steps you can do to begin your search: 1) Read job ads and pay attention to your reactions. What excites you? What makes you want to skip to the next ad? Consider how employers mention the skills they're looking for and how it relates to your experience. 2) Create a list of your ideal employers without restricting yourself to the attainable ones.
