Youthful Population: A Force for Change Africa's youthful population is a significant asset in the quest for empowerment. With over 60% of the continent's population under the age of 25, Africa has a vast pool of energetic, innovative, and entrepreneurial minds. By investing in education, skills development, and job creation, Africa can tap into the potential of its youth and unleash a wave of creativity, innovation, and progress. Empowerment through Self-Determination Empowerment begins with self-determination. Africans must take ownership of their development journey, setting their own agenda and prioritizing their own needs. Imagine the thrill of standing on a podium, the weight of an Olympic gold medal around your neck; not just one, but two. That’s exactly how I felt when I received an invitation from UNDP Nigeria to visit the UN House last week. I anticipated a meaningful experience, but what transpired was beyond my expectations. Walking into that room, filled with vibrant and passionate young minds, felt like stepping into the heart of our nation's future. The event theme was Forging the Future: Youth-Led MSMEs Innovating with Digital Solutions to Secure Sustainable Growth, Global Trade, and Resilient Food and Energy Systems. It was a mouthful, yes, but every word was a promise of what we could achieve together. As I listened and engaged, one thought kept echoing: Nigeria has everything it needs to thrive: resources, talent, and potential. Yet, paradoxically, so many still grapple with poverty. Why is this? The answer, I realized, was in the power of the youth around me. Young people are not just the future; they are the present. We are the backbone of our community, the force that can drive real change. I couldn’t help but reflect on the words of Elsie Attafuah, the UNDP Resident Representative, who said, “If Nigeria succeeds, Africa succeeds.” Our nation's success is not an isolated victory but a catalyst for continental progress. And then there was a powerful reminder from Ms Leilani Bin-Juda, the Australian High Commissioner to Nigeria: "The first three letters of the word ‘YOUth’ spell out our greatest power. YOU matter. YOU exist. And YOU are here for a reason." Every young person has a unique role to play. Every voice matters. Every idea has the potential to ignite change. But with the privilege of innovation comes responsibility. We must ensure our solutions do not create new problems as we forge new paths. It’s not just about finding quick fixes; it’s about building sustainable systems that work for everyone. This is our opportunity to learn, grow, and make a real impact. So, let’s take up the mantle. Let’s ensure that no one is left behind. By embracing our roles as leaders and innovators, we can build a world where everyone has the chance to succeed. On July 21, the African Union held its highly anticipated 6th Mid-Year Coordination Meeting in the vibrant heart of Ghana, marking a pivotal event in the continent’s developmental journey. This gathering aimed to harmonize efforts among the AU’s various organs and Regional Economic Communities (RECs), ensuring a unified stride towards the union's ambitious objectives. The meeting saw an impressive turnout, featuring heads of state, REC representatives, AU commissioners, and a myriad of stakeholders. Among the distinguished speakers was Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo, who delivered a compelling address on the necessity of unity and collective action for Africa’s advancement.
