An important look inside discussions at the House Early Childhood, Elementary and Secondary Education Subcommittee about the need for school systems, businesses, and industry leaders to work together on solutions for providing workplace skills to young people, lowering barriers to these programs, and ensuring equitable access to curriculum. ⬇ "We need CTE programs that are available to all students, so they can explore careers that interest them — whether or not they require a four-year degree or an industry-recognized credential." https://lnkd.in/dhiNCu6v

Day 4 of our teacher externship brought a purposeful exchange between teacher Kim Connors and Critical Loop founder Drew Felker. Kim has learned meaningful advice from Drew she would like to share, "If you want to do it, do it. Regardless of failure it is good to try." Instances like these transform the way we see education as a catalyst for creativity and innovation! #InnovationInEducation #Inspiration Link to Critical Loop- https://loom.ly/nQ_JqNY

How do we fix 'the leaky teacher pipeline'? Changing our way of seeing is a critical first step. I am grateful for opportunities to introduce communities to the collective impact approach. I've continued to evolve ecosystem mapping and collaboration processes and tools, which have helped scale impact in career and college readiness efforts across multiple states (through the work I lead at FourPoint Education Partners), to now help activate more robust educator ecosystems through Edifying Teachers (which provides mentorship for teachers throughout the entire pre-service to NBCT journey). Here is a snapshot of some of the critical factors, stakeholders, and opportunities to ensure a more robust, diverse, thriving teacher workforce here in the Greater Baltimore region, using the 4 A’s framework I introduced last year as a new way of framing the teacher journey: Awareness -> Apprenticeship -> Adequate Support -> Advancement. And here is a link to an educator ecosystem toolkit developed in collaboration with the Education Policy and Leadership graduate program led by Phelton Cortez Moss, Ph.D. at the American University School of Education, and two of his capstone students, Adrienne Porter, M.Ed and Melshaun Randolph, M.Ed. - the toolkit includes resources for every community, and an initial mapping of the Twin Cities (MN), Omaha (NE), Ector County (TX), and the Kansas City region: https://lnkd.in/e3VJd8Rb

It’s both incredibly short-sighted, a disservice to the community, and more than likely—a game of political opportunism when liberal arts colleges come under attack—even worse so when they close. Regardless of your personal politics, there’s nothing “liberal” about liberal arts—no more so than now in 2024 versus 1844. We simply can’t pivot society overnight to STEM-only colleges and/or corporate careers, nor can or should we cherry pick institutions to recruit and/or hire from. We need employees and community members who can effectively communicate in writing and verbally, have top-notch presentation skills, pick up context clues by just reading an email or memo, and we need those who can make sense of the important work being done in the STEM field, but explained in a way the rest of us can “get it” and understand. All of that is liberal arts education, so respectfully, don’t ask for people who can communicate effectively if you only want STEM candidates—it simply doesn’t work that way. As a product of a liberal arts education, someone who was/is very familiar with what BSC brought to the Birmingham community, and a neurodivergent learner myself, the ongoing losses of liberal arts institutions is disheartening. The state of Alabama and the city of Birmingham lost a great resource in a region where there aren’t many. Don’t think it can’t happen elsewhere, folks. #LiberalArtsMatter
Who are my ride or die liberal arts people? This one hit hard. CTCL schools are core. And now one of the bastions of critical thinking in Alabama is gone. Half of my family is from Birmingham. It’s about students always— find us a home in your distress. 💔

Signing day is one of my favorite days of the year! However, some post-secondary pathways don't involve a college education. How can we expand traditional signing days to ensure all students understand that the pathway they have researched and chosen is celebrated and valued? Spoiler alert - it's easy.
