Heather Gordon, Legal Director at Martyn Fiddler is excited to be attending SAF Investor London 2024 (27-28 February). This is stated to be an event which is not about arguing the case for SAF, but rather, about bringing dealmakers together who can make change happen. Throughout 2023 the aviation industry was under constant attack for its environmental impact, in particular business aviation. The industry wasn’t just under fire in the media: environmental protestors disrupted business aviation conferences, broke into airports and damaged private aircraft to highlight their cause. Extinction Rebellion, who attempted to block entry to Farnborough Airport by protest in November 2023, state that “private aviation significantly contributes to climate change due to its high carbon emissions. Flying in a private jet is the most inefficient and most carbon-intensive mode of transport”. While 2023 saw numerous initiatives start up to respond and educate the wider public about the environmental impact of business aviation, at Corporate Jet Investor Miami in November 2023 Ed Bolen warned that the mission to net zero is not just an #NBAA and business aviation mission – it is an aviation worldwide mission and requires everyone in the industry to come together to act in a way that is sustainable and to create energy independence. We want to join the conversation and are determined not to sit back and allow Bolens’ message to continue to fall on death ears. Velocys delists from AIM Velocys has completed delisting from the Alternative Investment Market (AIM) – sub market of the London Stock Exchange – following the acquisition from Madison Bidco. The company was delisted from the AIM on January 18 as part of the £4.5m deal which allows it secure an infusion of £32m growth capital from Madison Bidco (a consortium of US, UK and Singapore climate-focused investment houses). CDPQ, a global investment group, and SMBC Aviation Capital, one of the world’s largest aircraft leasing companies, announced today that they have finalized an agreement to create a USD 1.5-billion global aircraft financing and leasing platform dedicated to modern, fuel-efficient NextGen aircraft. This new platform will focus on worldwide opportunities in new technology aircraft and target an initial deployment of USD 500 million per year, over three years. SMBC Aviation Capital will source transactions and, under a sistership condition, invest in opportunities alongside the platform. Elliott Investment Management has built a stake of nearly $2 billion in Southwest Airlines increase; green up pointing triangle  and wants to overhaul the company’s leadership to boost its financial and stock performance. The activist is one of Southwest’s largest investors, confirming an earlier Wall Street Journal report. Elliott called for replacing Chief Executive Bob Jordan with an external candidate and overhauling the board at Southwest, which had a market capitalization of $16.6 billion as of Friday. It also called for management to lead a comprehensive business review. “While Southwest has a proud history, that history is not an argument for supporting poor leadership and sticking with a strategy that no longer succeeds in the modern airline industry,” Elliott officials wrote in a letter to the airline’s board.  Southwest shares rose 7.4% Monday morning, on pace for its biggest daily gain since November 2020. Jordan has been at the helm since February 2022. He took over for Gary Kelly, who had been in the role for nearly 17 years and remains executive chairman. Southwest said Monday its board is confident “in our CEO and management’s ability to execute against the company’s strategic plan.” The airline said it was first contacted by Elliott on Sunday and looked forward to better understanding the activist’s views. The firm is known for taking on tech companies and others and forcing changes that include management shake-ups and outright sales. Several companies in which Elliott has recently built positions have ultimately replaced their CEOs, including the big wireless-tower owner Crown Castle, NRG Energy and Goodyear Tire & Rubber.  It is a critical moment for Southwest, which took flight as a scrappy Texas upstart in the 1970s and grew into the largest domestic airline by passengers. It was known for undercutting competitors’ fares and stimulating demand for air travel. The Dallas-based carrier kept costs low in part by flying one type of plane, the Boeing 737, and became a customer favorite known for exceptional service.  TICKER: LUV
