I am not going to sell you that pen!
This week, a good client reached out and said, “Rob, can you quote me on these pens?” He sent me a link to a typical $2.00 pen. It was a decent pen for the price, but before sending him the quote, I gave him a quick call. Here’s how the conversation went:
Me: Hey Jim (not his real name), quick question about your email for the pens. What are you using them for?
Jim: It’s for an upcoming event where we’re showcasing our industry and company to high school students. We want them to visit our booth, have some fun, and learn about the cool opportunities our industry offers.
Me: Jim, if you want to stand out and truly showcase your industry through your SWAG, there are much better options that will get students more excited and engaged than a pen. Let me put together some ideas and send them over.
Jim: Rob, you rock! Send them over, I’m excited to see what you come up with.
Me: Check your inbox in an hour.
Two hours later, I received an email from Jim: “These ideas are awesome – our team loves the push pops. It’s different, engaging, and fun – exactly what our brand message is for this event!”
In the world of SWAG, the right item can say so much. We live by the acronym SWAG: Strategies With A Goal. With a well-thought-out SWAG strategy, you can achieve your desired results instead of just slapping your logo on something and hoping for the best.
Oh, and the results? Jim had to reorder halfway through the show due to the lineup of students at their booth. They had great conversations and inspired many kids to explore an industry they had never considered before.
