What are some of the Key Indigenous Learnings that resonated the most with our team at Thunder Bay? ----------------------------------------- Story #1: Developing children's resilience ----------------------------------------- During the first few hours in Thunder Bay, our team had the privilege of meeting various teachers who have dedicated their lives to the education of Indigenous students. These educators draw inspiration from the rich cultural heritage of the children, integrating ancient Indigenous practices into the modern school curriculum. By integrating activities that are deeply rooted in Indigenous traditions, students have not only become more engaged with their studies but also feel empowered to continuously learn how to do something in a better way. However, this way of teaching children isn’t new. For years, Indigenous communities have always taught the younger generation valuable life lessons on how to live in harmony with the land they reside on. Adolescents are mentored in practical life skills such as hunting and fishing which are essential to providing food for their families. Drawing from ancestral teachings, Elders often challenge the youth to fish without providing explicit instructions, allowing them the freedom to find better ways to capture fish. This approach encourages creative thinking and empowers the youth to explore unique solutions, fostering independence and resilience. #Charity #Notforprofit #KeyLearnings #IndigenousCulture #Canada

📚Empowering Futures: A Testimony from Waseem, Father of Uvail At SLI, we believe every child deserves a quality education, regardless of financial barriers. Here’s a heartfelt testimony from Waseem, one of the parents benefiting from our scholarship program: Waseem, Father of Uvail: "I am Uvail’s Father. I am not an educated man and this is the main reason I don’t have a respectable job in society. I have two children but in this era of inflation, after spending all my income to meet bills and house rent, I don’t have that much money left to send my children to private school for a quality education. Many thanks to the scholarship program which makes it possible for my kid to attend the English Medium school. Every day after he comes from school, my son talks about his teachers and how they are creatively teaching him. I become glad when I see my child coloring the pictures and speaking the sounds of the English alphabet. Once again thank you for providing a scholarship to my kid. I think that if I had this opportunity, my situation would be different, I would be raising my family differently. I am doing cleaning work but I don’t want my kids to do the same job in the future. I want them to prosper." Waseem’s story reminds us why we strive to make education accessible to all. By supporting our scholarship program, you are helping us transform lives and build a brighter future for children like Uvail. Together, we can break the cycle of poverty and empower the next generation to achieve their dreams. 🙏 Thank you for your continued support! 🙏 #EducationForAll #EmpowermentThroughEducation #ScholarshipProgram #ChangingLives #FutureLeaders #Nonprofit

Bridging the gap isn’t just about filling a couple cracks—it’s about creating a stronger foundation where every student has the opportunity to succeed. 🏗️ 🏃 By providing flexible, immediate support through our FAST Funds, we help students stay focused on achieving their goals. 🗣️ By championing student voices through our Changemakers Fellowship, we empower students to lead initiatives to help their peers on campus. 🫶 And by collaborating with educators and partners to create the #RealCollege Curriculum, we're developing tools to help campuses cultivate supportive communities that empower students to thrive. As we look ahead, we know that our work is more vital than ever. To see the kinds of challenges students will face in the coming years, look no further than Project 2025 or this insightful article on how the children of undocumented parents may forgo college altogether because applying for the FAFSA could lead to deportation: https://lnkd.in/gKubAt82 We know even more hurdles are coming than we can anticipate, but as Traci Kirtley said in her Letter from the Executive Director: 💬 "The road in front of us is still one we gladly take: we will continue fighting to build a bridge between where students are and the degrees they’re pushing towards. We will continue acting when we see chances to affect institutional change. And we look forward to new partnerships and new opportunities for sustainable, lasting impact, with our students leading the way, because when they tell us what they need, we believe them. We hope you’re with us." 🎓Join us this #GivingTuesday and donate here: https://lnkd.in/gKY_XtXw #SupportStudents #EquityInEducation #HigherEd #StudentSuccess

Giving Tuesday pro tip: here are two free, easy ways to get a bit more value out of a donation. 1. If you are making a donation because you are somehow prompted by someone in your life - maybe they work there or volunteer there, serve on the board, or have received services from them - there's almost always a place to leave a note or a dedication or say the gift is in honor of someone. List that person's name! It's easy, it doesn't cost anything, and good nonprofits will tell that person about it. I just did this today, with a gift that came in dedicated to one of our incredible campus leaders. It made me feel really good about that leader, I passed it on to her and it made her feel good, and I bet it made that donor feel good, too. And, it increases everyone's connection to the work of the organization. Free intangible benefit just by typing in someone's name. 2. If it's not because of a particular person, you can likely also list a reason you made the donation. We received a donation today that said, "UIC Fast Fund has helped my students get past financial issues that might have derailed their semester. This is a great resource for our students!" A comment like that can be super helpful to an organization in promoting their work (see how I just did that?). It only takes a minute to write that, and in addition to your donation, you've just provided some valuable content. Happy Giving Tuesday, everyone.

Literacy is the foundation for opportunity, growth, and connection. It’s more than reading and writing—it’s about unlocking potential, building confidence, and accessing the tools to engage with the world. Because literacy is more than a skill - it's a bridge to equity, inclusion, and progress. In Mid Canterbury, we're not just talking about literacy, we're taking action and changing the future for our children. Advance Ashburton Community Foundation is proud to fund the BOOST Literacy programme in collaboration with Mackenzie Charitable Foundation and Heartland Bank LTD. This year, more than 200 children in 19 schools throughout Mid Canterbury and in homeschooling, participated in BOOST. These children, identified as needing extra support in literacy, received 2 hours of free tuition every week for 30 weeks, supported one-on-one by trained volunteer tutors. In 2025, children involved in BOOST gained an average of one year in spelling age over the 30 week programme. This is an outstanding result, especially considering that many of the children involved in BOOST are neurodiverse, have behavioural challenges, or English is not their first language. However, one of the greatest results of the programme is the increased confidence these children gain which translates to progress across all areas of the curriculum. In Mid Canterbury, we're working together to ensure everyone has the power to write their own story. #advanceashburton #midcanterbury #literacymatters #education #empowerment #inclusion #communityimpact
